RSL pulls level late as LAFC’s two-goal lead slips away in Sandy

Chris Yohou Avatar

LAFC led twice and could not hold on either time, leaving America First Field with a 2-2 draw against Real Salt Lake in MLS Western Conference play. Bouanga and Son Heung-Min combined for both visiting goals before halftime, trading assists in what looked like a comfortable away night. Caliskan’s finish in the 75th minute made it 2-2 and kept RSL from falling to a third straight loss. The point leaves LAFC sitting third in the West on 37 points, three back of Houston Dynamo, while Real Salt Lake climbs to 29 points in 10th.

Real Salt Lake vs Los Angeles FC

Key Moments

  • 14′, LAFC breaks the deadlock: Bouanga converts with an assist from Son Heung-Min to give the visitors the lead.
  • 18′, RSL hits straight back: Lobzhanidze equalizes just four minutes later to make it 1-1.
  • 38′, Son Heung-Min makes it 2-1 before the break, this time on the end of a Bouanga assist, restoring LAFC’s advantage.
  • 67′, Pablo Mastroeni reshuffles with two substitutions, sending on Yedlin and Hezarkhani for Arias and Lobzhanidze.
  • 75′, Caliskan levels for RSL with a midfield run finished from inside the box, making it 2-2 and denying LAFC the three points.

Tactical Breakdown

Real Salt Lake dominated the ball, finishing with 58 percent possession and 22 total shots compared to LAFC’s 18. Pablo Mastroeni’s 3-4-3 pressed high in the first half and got a rapid equalizer from Lobzhanidze at 18 minutes, but LAFC’s two forwards were sharp in transition. Son Heung-Min and Bouanga combined in both directions on their goals, and Lloris was rarely called into serious difficulty in the first 45 minutes. RSL’s 11 shots inside the box showed a consistent attacking intent that eventually told.

The real shift came in the 67th minute when Mastroeni went to his bench, replacing the booked Arias and withdrawn Lobzhanidze with Yedlin and Hezarkhani. That double change tilted RSL’s energy in the final quarter-hour. Caliskan, operating in central midfield throughout, had been pressing into attacking positions, and his 75th-minute goal was the payoff. LAFC did not make their own substitutions until the 82nd minute, when Tyler Boyd and Shaffelburg came off for Sieb and Raposo, by which point the equalizer had already landed.

Marc Dos Santos’s LAFC side left themselves exposed in the second half by sitting deeper after going 2-1 up, allowing Real Salt Lake’s Noel Caliskan to equalize in the 75th minute. LAFC managed only six shots on goal across 90 minutes, and once RSL found the right channel in the 70s they created the volume they needed. The visiting defense, solid on paper with 24 goals against all season, conceded from a midfield runner who went largely untracked. Three draws in a row now for LAFC, a sequence that is eating into the cushion they built through the summer.

Player Ratings

Bouanga
9.0/10. A goal and an assist, involved in everything productive going forward for LAFC.
Son Heung-Min
9.0/10. Assisted Bouanga’s opener then finished his own chance before halftime, the two forwards feeding off each other all night.
Lloris
8.0/10. Seven saves kept the deficit from being far worse and kept LAFC in the game throughout the second half.
Caliskan
8.0/10. The equalizer was the highlight but he was active throughout, covering ground in both phases for Real Salt Lake.
Lobzhanidze
7.5/10. RSL’s quickest responder, scoring at 18 minutes before being withdrawn at 67 as part of Mastroeni’s tactical reset.
Luna
7.0/10. Held his line all 90 minutes and gave RSL a constant threat in behind the LAFC defensive shape.

Head To Head

Verdict

LAFC’s third consecutive draw is a soft stretch at a moment when FC Dallas and St. Louis City both have 37 points and a game in hand on them. Marc Dos Santos’s side remains third in the Western Conference with 37 points, but the buffer that once looked comfortable has shrunk after dropping two points at Sandy, where goals from Denis Bouanga and Son Heung-min were not enough to hold off Real Salt Lake. For Real Salt Lake, the point ends a three-game losing run and keeps them in touch with the playoff picture at 29 points, though they still sit outside the top nine.
