Aston Villa host Forest still searching for first Premier League win

Chris Yohou Avatar

Three days after beating Club Brugge 3-2 in their Champions League opener, Aston Villa return to domestic matters in a very different mood than their league form suggests. Unai Emery’s side sit 17th in the Premier League with just one point from three games, yet that win in Belgium showed there is quality in this squad. Nottingham Forest arrive at Villa Park in only marginally better shape, 16th on two points, having drawn their last two league outings without scoring. Saturday’s clash may not carry title implications, but for two clubs with ambitions well above the bottom half, the table already needs addressing.

Match action

What’s at stake

At this early stage neither side is in any mathematical danger, but the gap to the top eight is already widening. Manchester City and Arsenal lead the division on nine points apiece after three games, with Hull City a surprise third on seven. Villa and Forest are eight points off the pace at the top of the table and six adrift of the Europa League places occupied by Brentford. A win here gets either club back into double digits in the race for Europe before the autumn really sets in.

For Villa, a home win would be the first Premier League victory of the season and ease the pressure from a run that has brought two league defeats and just the one draw. Forest, pointless against Leeds in the league earlier this season before back-to-back draws, need something to show for what has been a defensively shaky start. They have conceded three goals in three league games, while Villa have yet to score in the Premier League at all, making goals on both sides a genuine question mark heading into Saturday.

How they got here

Villa’s last five competitive results read W-D-L-L-L, though the context matters. The win was that Champions League victory over Brugge away from home, and the draw came at Hull in the league. The two losses were a 1-0 home defeat to Arsenal and a 4-0 thrashing at Brighton, results that expose defensive vulnerabilities Emery will want ironed out before bigger tests arrive. Forest’s sequence shows D-D-L across their three league games, with a League Cup exit at Leeds sandwiched in between. Their 2-2 draw at Liverpool looked promising, but they followed it with a goalless stalemate against Tottenham at the City Ground last weekend.

In the table Villa sit 17th on one point, Forest 16th on two. Both clubs are level on zero wins. The reality is that neither side has found anything close to their best form in the league, and the first three rounds have been more about damage limitation than building momentum. That Champions League performance by Villa at least offers evidence that the squad can perform under pressure on the road.

Key battle to watch

Villa’s inability to score in the Premier League this season points to a midfield supply problem as much as a finishing issue. Forest’s Ibrahim Sangare offers muscle and ball-winning in the centre, but if Villa’s Leon Goretzka and João Gomes can get on the ball and push the tempo, they should have the quality to unlock Oliver Glasner’s defensive shape. Forest have kept just one clean sheet in three league games, conceding three times, so the Villa front line has an opportunity if the service improves on what was seen in the losses to Arsenal and Brighton.

Head To Head

Our Prediction

Aston Villa have the home advantage and a confidence boost from midweek in Europe, but their league form has been genuinely poor and they have not scored a Premier League goal yet this season. Forest are disciplined without being threatening. Expect a tight, low-scoring affair where set pieces and individual errors are more likely to decide it than open play. Villa’s home record against Forest in recent meetings tilts the balance slightly toward the hosts, but a draw would surprise no one.
