Brighton carry top-three form into Sunderland test at the Stadium of Light

Chris Yohou Avatar

Three wins, a draw and a loss from their opening five Premier League games has Brighton sitting third, just a point behind Arsenal and five behind Manchester City’s perfect start. Fabian Hürzeler’s side have outscored every team in their vicinity, posting 16 goals while conceding only five, and they head to the Stadium of Light on October 10 with their Champions League qualification spot very much in play. Sunderland, back in the top flight after years away, sit 14th on four points and will need their home crowd to paper over a gap in quality that the table makes obvious.

Sunderland vs Brighton

What’s at stake

Brighton are third in the Premier League with 10 points from five matches, one behind second-placed Arsenal and five behind pace-setters Manchester City. The top four spots currently carry Champions League qualification, and Brentford and Leeds are breathing down Brighton’s neck on nine points each, meaning a defeat here would drop Hürzeler’s side out of the top four on goal difference at best. Every game in this early stretch matters as the cluster between third and seventh tightens.

For Sunderland, the math is less dramatic but the logic is clear: four points from five games leaves Regis Le Bris’s side only one point above the teams in the bottom three, and three consecutive league losses have given the season an uncomfortable early shape. A home win would push them to seven points and into the mid-table conversation. A fourth league defeat in five would deepen the questions around their ability to hold their own at this level.

Sunderland vs Brighton

How they got here

Brighton have won three of their last five across all competitions, including a commanding 3-0 home win over Arsenal and a 5-0 thumping of Coventry away. Their only Premier League loss came at Chelsea, where they conceded four, and they drew 1-1 with Leeds at the Amex. A League Cup win at Manchester United added to the confidence bank. The form reads W-W-D-L-W across those five outings and shows a side in decent rhythm going into the international break. Sunderland’s run has been harder to take: a 3-5 loss at Manchester City and a 0-2 home defeat to Arsenal bookend a League Cup win over Hull City and a 1-1 draw at Brentford. The Europa League, where they beat AZ Alkmaar 1-0 at home, is the one place they have shown they can defend a lead and take points.

Brighton sit third on 10 points, one behind Arsenal in second and five back from Manchester City. Sunderland are 14th on four points, level with Crystal Palace and Aston Villa immediately below them.

Key battle to watch

The most telling contest may be in behind Sunderland’s defensive line. Brighton have scored 16 goals in five league games, a rate that puts them among the most productive attacks in the division, and they have players like Kaoru Mitoma and Yankuba Minteh capable of exploiting space in behind at pace. Sunderland’s back four, which shipped five against Manchester City and two against Arsenal, has shown it struggles when opponents transition quickly. If Le Bris’s side is to take anything from this, they will need to stay compact and limit the moments where Brighton’s wide attackers can run at them with room. How Sunderland set up without the ball, and whether they can channel the defensive discipline they showed in Europe against AZ, will go a long way toward deciding the result.

Our Prediction

Brighton’s attack has too much variety and tempo for a Sunderland defense that has already been exposed by the division’s better sides. Hürzeler’s team should control possession and create enough to win, though Sunderland’s European display against AZ hints they can be organized when the moment demands it. Expect Brighton to take the three points, but a clean sheet is far from guaranteed given the chaos both of these teams have produced in front of goal this season.
