Ten-man Brighton beat Sunderland 2-0 with two late goals

Chris Yohou Avatar

Brighton produced one of the more unusual wins of the Premier League season so far, beating Sunderland 2-0 at the Stadium of Light on Saturday while playing more than 30 minutes with ten men. Pascal Struijk was sent off in the 57th minute following a VAR review, just four minutes after M. De Cuyper had given the visitors the lead. Rather than capitulating, Fabian Hürzeler’s side held firm and substitute Hadjam added a second in stoppage time to wrap up a result that flatters neither team’s performance but is hard to argue with on the xG numbers.

Match action

Key Moments

  • 34′, Sunderland forced an early change when Meunier came off injured, with Fofana entering to try to add some attacking impetus.
  • 53′, Brighton broke the deadlock. Groß played M. De Cuyper through and the midfielder finished to make it 1-0.
  • 56′, VAR intervened to upgrade a challenge by Struijk, with the card review confirmed on screen moments later.
  • 57′, Struijk was shown a red card, reducing Brighton to ten men and immediately flipping the dynamic of the game.
  • 60′, Hürzeler responded to the red card by withdrawing Kostoulas and bringing on Dunk to shore up the defensive structure.
  • 90′, Hadjam, on as a late substitute, converted a pass from Rutter to seal the 2-0 win and end any lingering Sunderland hope.

Tactical Breakdown

Sunderland dominated possession throughout, finishing with 62 percent of the ball and 495 total passes to Brighton’s 305. The home side generated 12 shots in total and held an xG of 0.68, but only three of those attempts were on target and Roefs’ opposite number Verbruggen was rarely tested in any meaningful way. Brighton, by contrast, were sharper in front of goal: 13 shots, an xG of 1.14, and four on target. The visitors did not need to play pretty football to win this game.

The sending-off of Struijk in the 57th minute was the obvious turning point, though Brighton’s response to it was telling. Hürzeler immediately replaced Kostoulas with Dunk to protect the lead, then withdrew Boscagli and M. De Cuyper together at 68 minutes, bringing on Costinha and Yalcouyé to manage the rest of the game with ten men. Sunderland made three substitutions of their own in the final 20 minutes looking for a way back in, but the home team’s attacking output never matched their share of the ball.

For Sunderland, the inability to exploit a numerical advantage for more than 30 minutes will be a cause for concern. The home side had seven corners and 12 total shots but could not find a way past Verbruggen, and the four-match losing run in the league now stretches back to a W in their fifth game. With Mukiele their standout performer at the back, the defensive side of things has not been the problem; it is the lack of a clinical edge going forward that has defined their difficult start to the season.

Player Ratings

M. De Cuyper
7.5/10. Scored the opener at 53 minutes and was a constant outlet before being withdrawn at 68 as part of Brighton’s reorganisation after the red card.
Groß
7.5/10. Played the full 90 and provided the assist for the opening goal; one of the more composed performers in a chaotic second half.
Hadjam
7.0/10. Came on in the 88th minute and converted almost immediately to seal the win, his goal killing off any Sunderland comeback attempt.
Verbruggen
7.0/10. Made three saves and was not genuinely beaten all evening, giving Brighton the clean sheet their defending deserved.
Mukiele
7.5/10. Sunderland’s best player on the night, disciplined and assured at the back in a game where his team were beaten but not overrun defensively.
Struijk
5.5/10. A poor individual performance that ended in a red card via VAR at 57 minutes, forcing his team to manage the rest of the game a man light.
Rutter
6.5/10. Came on in the 88th minute and immediately contributed the assist for Hadjam’s goal, making an instant impact off the bench.
Sadiki
6.5/10. One of the more industrious performers in Sunderland’s midfield, though could not unlock Brighton’s shape in the final third.

Head To Head

Verdict

Brighton sit third in the Premier League with 13 points from six games, two behind the top two on equal or fewer matches played. Sunderland remain in 16th on four points, their fourth league defeat of the season leaving them in a difficult position in the bottom half. For Hürzeler’s side, beating a top-flight opponent while playing over a third of the game with ten men says something real about the team’s defensive organization and character this season.
