Soccer veterans in their mid thirties are owning the 2026/27 season, led by Mohamed Salah, who set a Turkish Süper Lig record with 10 goal contributions in his first seven games for Trabzonspor at 34. From MLS to Serie A, these five stars keep deciding big games at an age when most careers start to fade.
Why this list matters
For decades, a player’s mid thirties meant a quieter role, a bench spot or a farewell tour. The current season is telling a very different story, with several stars born in 1991 and 1992 still carrying their teams.
This ranking weighs current form, statistical output and influence on results. Every player listed is 34 or 35 as of October 2026.
5. Kevin De Bruyne
Kevin De Bruyne is reinventing himself at Napoli at 35, and the early returns look vintage. His debut season in Italy was wrecked by a thigh injury, limiting him to five goals and four assists in 21 appearances as Napoli finished second in Serie A.
Massimiliano Allegri’s arrival changed the mood. In October, De Bruyne scored twice in a 3-0 win over Frosinone while playing deeper in a midfield pair beside Stanislav Lobotka, his first Serie A brace. Allegri said afterward that the Belgian looks even better as a playmaker in that role.
- Games with two or more goals in Europe’s top five leagues: 12
He also helped Belgium reach the quarterfinals of the 2026 World Cup on North American soil. US fans can follow his second act in Naples on Paramount+.
4. Son Heung-min
Son Heung-min has become the best creator in MLS at 34. His 2026 season started strangely, with no goal in his first 13 league matches, yet his passing never dipped.
In April, he delivered four assists in the first half of a 6-0 rout of Orlando City, becoming only the second player in league history after Lionel Messi to reach four in a single half. By late September, he had pulled level with Messi atop the MLS assist chart.
- MLS assists in 2026 (through late September): 13
Add six league goals, a fourth World Cup as South Korea’s captain and his 2025 MLS Goal of the Year award, and LAFC still have a veteran who defines their attack. Every LAFC match streams on Apple TV.
3. Virgil van Dijk
Virgil van Dijk remains the most durable elite defender in the Premier League at 35. In 2025/26, he played every single minute of Liverpool’s league campaign, the only outfield player in the division to do so.
That reliability matters even more now. Liverpool have a new head coach in Andoni Iraola, Ibrahima Konaté has left on a free transfer, and the start of the season has been uneven. Van Dijk still organizes the back line and sets the standard as captain.
- Premier League minutes missed in 2025/26: 0
His contract runs until the summer of 2027, so every Liverpool match on Peacock this season carries extra weight for one of the great defenders of his generation.
2. Antoine Griezmann
Antoine Griezmann has transformed Orlando City since arriving from Atlético Madrid in July. The record goalscorer in Atlético history, with more than 210 goals for the club, needed only a few weeks to adapt to MLS.
Through 12 league appearances, he has nine goals and five assists. Orlando sat 13th in the Eastern Conference when he joined and climbed to seventh after a 3-2 win over Columbus Crew on October 10, a night when he set up the opener and curled in a free kick.
- MLS goal contributions in 12 games: 14
The most telling number is simple: Orlando have not lost a single match in which Griezmann has scored, with seven wins and one draw across all competitions. The 2018 World Cup winner is now a serious contender for MLS Newcomer of the Year, and his playoff push streams on Apple TV.
1. Mohamed Salah
Mohamed Salah is the most dominant veteran in world soccer right now, and the numbers are historic. After nine seasons and 257 goals for Liverpool, he left Anfield in June and signed with Trabzonspor in August at 34.
His start in Turkey has been relentless. Salah became the first player in Süper Lig history to reach 10 goal contributions in his first seven league games, with seven goals and three assists.
- Süper Lig goal contributions in his first seven games: 10 (league record)
The signature moment came against defending champions Galatasaray, when he scored a hat trick and added an assist in a 4-0 win, including one finish after a long solo sprint. That display helped earn him the Süper Lig Player of the Month award for September. US fans can catch Trabzonspor on beIN Sports.
The verdict
Salah takes the top spot because his Turkish start has already rewritten the league’s record book. Griezmann edges Van Dijk thanks to the immediate turnaround he sparked in Orlando, while Son and De Bruyne complete a list built on intelligence, timing and serious professionalism.
Thibaut Courtois just misses the cut. At 34, he remains Real Madrid’s undisputed starter and is reportedly close to a contract extension through 2028.
