Villa host Viking on the back of a Newcastle win that has them flying

Chris Yohou Avatar

Four days after grinding out a 1-0 win at Newcastle, Aston Villa return to Villa Park with a full head of steam. Unai Emery’s side have now won two straight Champions League matches, including a 6-0 demolition of Fenerbahce at home, and they carry that confidence into their matchday 3 hosting of Viking. The Norwegian side arrive having drawn with Bayern Munich in their last UCL outing, a result that showed they can compete but left them with just one point from two games and needing a response.

What’s at stake

With only two matchdays played in the 36-team league stage, the standings mean little in absolute terms, but momentum is everything in a format where consistency over eight games determines whether you go straight to the round of 16 or fight through a playoff round. Villa sit on six points from six, one of only eight teams to have won both their opening fixtures. A third win would put them in a strong position to target a top-eight finish and automatic passage to the last 16.

For Viking, the math is harder. One point and a goal difference of minus two already puts pressure on the remaining six matchdays. A loss here does not eliminate them, but it makes a run through the playoff bracket the most realistic path forward. A win, however, would shift the conversation entirely and announce their presence in this competition in a way that a point against Bayern alone could not.

How they got here

Villa’s last five results read W, W, D, W, W across Premier League and Champions League action. That Brentford draw at home is the only blemish in a recent stretch that includes wins at Tottenham and Newcastle plus the rout of Fenerbahce. Viking, meanwhile, have been in fine domestic form, beating Fredrikstad 3-2 last weekend and Brann 2-0 in the Eliteserien before that. Their European campaign opened with a loss and then that eye-catching 3-3 draw with Bayern Munich at home, a result that showed attacking intent but also defensive vulnerability.

Villa have scored nine goals and conceded two in their two UCL games so far. Viking have scored four and conceded six in theirs. The contrast in firepower at this level is stark, even if Viking showed against Bayern that they are willing to trade blows.

Key battle to watch

Viking held Bayern to 3-3 by playing with an open, aggressive shape, looking to press high and transition quickly. That approach invites space in behind, and Villa’s attack has been ruthless at exploiting exactly that. Emery tends to use width aggressively, and with players like Ian Maatsen and Alejandro Garnacho available on the flanks, Viking’s back line will face repeated runs in behind. If Viking’s high press becomes disorganized, Villa will punish it the way they punished Fenerbahce. The key question is whether Bjarte Aarsheim sets his side up to limit damage or accepts a free-scoring game in the hope of nicking something on the counter.

Our Prediction

Villa are in the kind of form that makes them difficult to stop at Villa Park, and the 6-0 showing against Fenerbahce set a tone for European nights at B6 this season. Viking have spirit and goalscoring ability, as Bayern found out, but the defensive exposure that came with that Bayern draw is likely to be tested hard here. Expect Emery’s side to control the match and add to their tally, though Viking’s willingness to press high means this will not be a completely quiet evening.
