Switzerland made their Round of 32 assignment look straightforward on Thursday night at BC Place, goals from Breel Embolo and Dan Ndoye either side of halftime securing a 2-0 win over Algeria. The Swiss did it without the ball, Algeria controlling 55 percent of possession, but Vladimir Petkovic’s side mustered just 0.73 expected goals against a defence that stayed compact and punished every lapse. Murat Yakin’s team advances to the knockout round; Algeria goes home.

Tactical Breakdown
Switzerland set up in a 4-2-3-1 under Yakin and were perfectly content to let Algeria have the ball. Algeria finished with 55 percent possession and 561 passes at an 85 percent accuracy rate; Switzerland had just 436. But the Swiss used their ball time better. They registered 11 shots to Algeria’s eight, with nine arriving inside the box, and posted an xG of 2.56 against the Algerians’ 0.73. The two goals were entirely in line with the flow of the match, not against it.
The second goal, Ndoye’s effort 46 seconds into the second half, was the turning point that made any Algeria comeback unrealistic. Petkovic responded with a double substitution at the 58-minute mark and then introduced Riyad Mahrez and Bentaleb on 71 minutes, restructuring the attack with more experienced options. Switzerland, already two goals clear, absorbed the pressure without alarm. Yakin’s own double change at 71 minutes refreshed the legs in midfield, and Embolo came off on 83 after completing his job.
Algeria’s chief problem was converting possession into danger. A 0.73 xG total tells its own story: the patterns of play looked fluid at times but the final decisions in the final third were poor. Only two shots tested Gregor Kobel, and he saved both. Chaibi’s yellow card on 36 minutes was symptomatic of a side that knew its build-up wasn’t working and began resorting to physical disruption. Once Ndoye scored at the start of the second half, there was no realistic path back.

Verdict
Switzerland advance to the Round of 16 of the 2026 World Cup with a performance that was efficient rather than spectacular. Algeria, with the better possession numbers, leaves Vancouver with nothing; the xG gap of 2.56 to 0.73 suggests the margin of victory could have been wider. Yakin’s side will face tougher opponents in the next round, but Thursday’s result shows they have the defensive structure and the counter-attacking quality to trouble anyone.
