Which retro Mexico shirts you can still buy
Retro Mexico is one of the most searched shirt archives in the United States, and also one of the easiest to get wrong, because the two most wanted designs are the two hardest to buy honestly. Here is the state of play. The 1986 shirt exists again as an official Adidas reissue, in stock in the US at 110 dollars. The 1998 Piedra del Sol has one documented official reissue, made by Aba Sport itself as a UK exclusive in limited runs. Everything else is the second hand market, where each shirt is a single item in a single size and condition.
The originals, and what they cost
On the second hand side the prices track scarcity rather than beauty. A 1994-95 home shirt, the Jorge Campos era, sits near 490 dollars. A 1999 home shirt runs between 560 and 700. The 2000-01 home is around 350. Then the curve breaks: 2014-15 away shirts, including one printed J. Hernandez 14, sit between 175 and 210, the 2015-17 away at 115, the 2022-23 authentic away at 115, and a well worn 2011-13 away can be had near 35 dollars. If you want a Mexico shirt to wear rather than to keep, the 2010s are where the value is.
1998, the design everyone is copying
Aba Sport printed the Piedra del Sol, the Aztec sun stone, across the whole front of the 1998 shirt, with pyramids and pre-Hispanic symbols on green. Cuauhtemoc Blanco, Luis Hernandez, Claudio Suarez and Jorge Campos wore it at France 98 and went out in the round of 16. It was divisive then and it is canonical now, to the point that Adidas rebuilt the 2026 home shirt on the same geometry.
That popularity has a cost. The 1998 retro market is saturated with unlicensed copies, and a shirt advertised as an original at a low price almost never is.
1986, the green shirt and the scissor kick
The 1986 shirt belongs to the tournament Mexico hosted, the first quarter final in the country's history, and to Manuel Negrete's scissor kick against Bulgaria on 15 June, voted the greatest World Cup goal by FIFA's fan poll in 2002. The one-two before the volley was played with Javier Aguirre, who coaches the team today. Adidas reissued it in January 2026 with the period polo collar and crest, which makes it the only pre-1990 Mexico shirt you can buy new and licensed.
How to avoid buying a fake
Mexico is the most counterfeited shirt in the United States by some distance. US Customs and Border Protection closed its 2026 World Cup operation with 476,903 counterfeit items seized, and the single largest lot was over 18,000 fake Mexico jerseys worth more than 2.7 million dollars. On a modern shirt, check that the country of manufacture matches between the neck label and the inner wash label, search the product code on adidas.com, and press the crest: genuine ones are thin silicone, fakes are thick and glued. On a vintage shirt, buy graded, from a seller who photographs the actual item rather than a stock picture.
