Switzerland controlled nearly every phase of this match but left Houston with just one point. Breel Embolo converted a 17th-minute penalty to give the Swiss the lead they deserved, and with 26 shots and an xG of 3.24, Murat Yakin’s side could have won by a wider margin. It took a 90th-minute header from Boualem Khoukhi, set up by Homam Al-Amin, to rescue Qatar in what felt more like a Swiss loss than a Qatari achievement.

Key moments

  • 17′ — Breel Embolo converts a penalty to give Switzerland an early lead after Qatar conceded a foul in the area.
  • 90′ — Boualem Khoukhi heads home from Homam Al-Amin’s cross to level for Qatar in injury time.

Tactical breakdown

Switzerland pressed high and created chances throughout, but could not convert their dominance into a comfortable victory. Their 26 shots and 3.24 xG told a damning story of clinical failure at the worst possible moment.

Qatar sat deep under Julen Lopetegui, defending in numbers and absorbing pressure. The approach was pragmatic but it kept Qatar in the match long enough to capitalise on Switzerland’s finishing issues.

For Switzerland, failing to put away an opponent they outplayed so thoroughly will be a concern heading into the rest of the group stage. They had the chances to win comfortably; they came away with one point.

Player ratings

Breel Embolo (SUI) 7.5 – Scored from the spot and was a constant threat in behind the Qatar defensive line.

Boualem Khoukhi (QAT) 7.0 – The hero at the death; his composed header from Al-Amin’s cross rescued Qatar’s opening result.

Homam Al-Amin (QAT) 7.0 – His cross in the 90th minute was precise and changed the complexion of Qatar’s tournament.

Murat Yakin (SUI) 5.5 – His team did everything but finish the game off. The missed chances will be the talking point in the Swiss camp for days.

Verdict

Qatar showed resilience against a Switzerland side that was markedly the better team. The Swiss have only themselves to blame for not converting a dominant performance into three points. Both remain in the mix in Group A, but Switzerland’s clinical issues need addressing before their next fixture.
