Germany walk into NRG Stadium on Sunday carrying momentum that few teams at this tournament can match. Eight wins from their last eight matches, including a 2-1 defeat of host nation USA just eight days ago on American soil, make them one of the form sides heading into the group stage. Their opponents, Curacao, arrive at their first World Cup after a preparation that included a 5-1 loss to Australia and a 4-1 defeat against Scotland. The quality gap is significant, but Germany’s recent tournament exits, in the group stage in 2018 and the round of 16 in 2022, have made sure nobody in their camp is taking this for granted.

What’s at stake

For Germany, this opener is about tone-setting. Their last two World Cups ended in painful early exits, and opening with a convincing win against Curacao would go some way to signalling that this group is different. The expectation is three points; the question is whether they can deliver the kind of performance that announces them as genuine contenders.

For Curacao, the occasion itself is historic. A nation of around 160,000 people, they reached the World Cup for the first time after navigating a competitive CONCACAF qualification campaign. A clean defensive showing against one of Europe’s top sides would be a result worth celebrating regardless of the scoreline. Their fans, many of whom have travelled to Houston, will be watching a moment their football federation has worked towards for a generation.

How they got here

Germany won their European qualifying group without losing a match, including a 6-0 demolition of Slovakia last November. Their pre-tournament form has been just as consistent: 4-0 over Finland, 2-1 against Ghana, a 4-3 away win against Switzerland in March. The win over the USA on June 6 was perhaps the most meaningful warm-up result of any team at this tournament. They won in America, against the host nation, just over a week before the competition began.

Curacao’s qualifying path had its own highlights. They won 2-0 against Jamaica and hammered Bermuda 7-0 on their way through CONCACAF. But the preparation fixtures against stronger opposition told a harder story: losses of 5-1 to Australia, 2-0 to China and 4-1 to Scotland before a 4-0 warm-up win over Aruba last weekend. The results against Australia and Scotland in particular showed the gap between CONCACAF-level competition and what awaits them in Group A.

Key battle to watch

Germany’s attacking movement against Curacao’s defensive structure will define the match. Curacao will attempt to stay compact and deny space in behind in the early stages; their best chance of a positive result depends on keeping Germany frustrated and avoiding the kind of early goal that forces them to open up. Germany’s wide players, who have been effective in transition throughout their recent run, present the most direct threat for a Curacao backline that conceded nine goals in its last two matches against comparable opposition.

Key stats

  • Germany last 5: W W W W W (vs USA, Finland, Ghana, Switzerland, Slovakia)
  • Curacao last 5: W L L L D
  • Germany: 23 goals scored in their last 8 matches
  • Curacao: 9 goals conceded in their last 2 games against competitive opposition (5-1 vs Australia, 4-1 vs Scotland)
  • Head-to-head: No previous meetings between the two nations
  • Kick-off: June 14, 17:00 UTC at NRG Stadium, Houston

Prediction

Germany are the better team by a considerable margin and their form going into this match is as good as any side at the tournament. The timing of the first goal will shape everything: score early and Curacao could concede a heavy defeat; keep it tight for 30 minutes and they might at least limit the damage. Germany to win, likely by multiple goals.
