Best XI of the 2026 World Cup

Nathan Avatar

The first 48 team World Cup was supposed to be bloated. Instead it gave us the deepest field of individual performances the tournament has ever seen, a Golden Boot race that needed a calculator, and a group stage upset that turned an unknown goalkeeper into a global celebrity overnight.

Picking eleven players out of that is close to cruel. We have gone with a 4-3-3, we have weighted peak moments as heavily as consistency, and we have made no apology for the fact that the deep runs of Spain, Argentina, France and England dominate the list. That is usually how these things work.

Goalkeeper: Vozinha, Cape Verde

The best story of the tournament also happens to have been one of its best performances. Cape Verde arrived at their first World Cup as the smallest nation in the field and left with a reputation, largely because their 40 year old captain refused to be beaten. He kept a clean sheet against reigning European champions Spain on debut, backed it up through the group stage, then made eight saves in an extra time defeat to Argentina in the round of 32.

He was not just a shot stopper either. FIFA’s own tracking had him leading the field for goalkeeper distribution in the group stage, which is the modern job description in a sentence.

  • Saves in the round of 32 against Argentina: 8

Emiliano Martinez and Gregor Kobel both have strong cases. Neither had a month like this.

Defense: Porro, Upamecano, Laporte, Cucurella

Spain conceded once in seven matches on the way to the final, and three of that back four earn spots here. Pedro Porro only nailed down the right back job in the knockout rounds and then played like a man making up for lost time, scoring his first international goal against Austria and finishing off the best team move of the tournament in the semifinal win over France. His relationship with Lamine Yamal down that flank was the single most productive partnership in North America.

Aymeric Laporte is the calm at the center of it. Alongside teenager Pau Cubarsi, he has been almost impossible to play through, and his passing out of pressure is what allows Spain to build the way they do. Marc Cucurella, so often a punchline at club level this season, has been the opposite in red, aggressive going forward and reliable when the game turned.

Dayot Upamecano is the one intruder. France kept three straight knockout clean sheets against Sweden, Paraguay and Morocco before Spain finally cracked them, and Upamecano was the reason. Strength, recovery pace and clean distribution, all without the lapses that used to follow him around.

  • Goals conceded by Spain in seven matches: 1

Midfield: Rodri, Enzo Fernandez, Bellingham

Enzo Fernandez #24 of Argentina celebrates scoring his team’s third goal during the FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 16 match between Argentina and Egypt at Atlanta Stadium on July 07, 2026 in Atlanta, Georgia.
Jude Bellingham #10 of England celebrates scoring his team’s second goal during the FIFA World Cup 2026 Quarter Final match between Norway and England at Miami Stadium on July 11, 2026 in Miami Gardens, Florida.

Rodri is the least spectacular player in this XI and probably the most important. He captained Spain, he set the tempo, and he was the reason a defense that faced France, Belgium and a loaded field barely conceded. If he lifts the trophy, a second Ballon d’Or is a serious conversation.

Enzo Fernandez has made a habit of showing up when Argentina need saving. He headed the winner that completed the comeback against Egypt in the round of 16, then hit the equalizer from distance in the semifinal against England. Four years after his breakout in Qatar, he is the engine that makes Messi’s Argentina function rather than the passenger.

Jude Bellingham is the reason England got as far as they did, and probably the reason they will spend the next four years wondering what if. His solo goal against Croatia announced him, then he produced match winning braces against Mexico and Norway, the second of which included the best individual run and finish of the knockout rounds. He came off the bench in the third place game and scored again.

  • Bellingham goals at the 2026 World Cup: 7

Dani Olmo and Tyler Adams both have arguments. So does Kevin De Bruyne, whose Belgium ran into the Spanish wall in the quarterfinals.

Attack: Mbappe, Messi, Haaland

Lionel Messi #10 of Argentina celebrates with teammates after the 2-1 win during the FIFA World Cup 2026 Semi Final match between England and Argentina at Atlanta Stadium on July 15, 2026 in Atlanta, Georgia.
Erling Haaland (right, Norway) high-fives Kylian Mbappé (left, France) after the game.

This is where the tournament will be remembered. Kylian Mbappe has now played three World Cups and been the best forward at all three, which is a sentence that used to be reserved for one or two names in the sport’s entire history. A strike from range against Senegal, a solo goal against Sweden, a curled finish against Morocco and a brace in the third place game took him past Lionel Messi at the top of the all time World Cup scoring chart.

  • Mbappe career World Cup goals: 22

Messi is the other half of that story. At 39, in his sixth World Cup, he opened with the first hat trick of his World Cup career against Algeria and was not shut out of a match until the quarterfinals. He set up both Argentina goals in the semifinal win over England. He arrives at the final in New Jersey with a chance to become the first player to win the Golden Ball three times and the World Cup twice in the same decade of his career.

Erling Haaland completes the front three, and this is not a lifetime achievement pick. He dragged Norway to the quarterfinals, their best ever World Cup run, with a brace in the opener against Iraq and then a stunning double against Brazil that featured a header and a strike from range. He went quiet against England. Everything before that earned him this spot.

The American view

No United States player makes this XI, which is fair, but Malik Tillman deserves the mention. He scored in consecutive knockout matches, including a free kick against Belgium that briefly made Seattle believe. Matt Freese had a difficult night in that same game, and Mauricio Pochettino leaves with three World Cup wins, more than any USMNT manager has managed. A round of 16 exit on home soil stings. The performances of Tillman, Christian Pulisic and Alex Freeman are what the next cycle gets built on.

One match left

The final in New Jersey can still rewrite parts of this. A Messi masterpiece would settle the Golden Ball argument permanently. A Rodri performance in a Spain win would end the Ballon d’Or debate before it starts. That is the beauty of a tournament that has kept producing right up to the last kick.

Eleven players, six nations, one 40 year old from Cape Verde who changed his life in a month. The biggest World Cup ever staged earned every bit of the noise.
