In this consolation match following the AFCON final, Nigeria defeated Egypt in a penalty shootout. A small consolation to close out a disappointing campaign.

In a balanced match with very few chances, Nigerians and Egyptians mostly let time pass. A long and dull stretch for the spectators at Mohamed V Stadium in Casablanca. It ultimately took a penalty shootout to see goals in this match, with two misses from Egypt securing third place for the Super Eagles.
On both sides, disappointment prevails. Denied World Cup qualification, Nigeria had hoped to heal its wounds with a continental title, but Morocco put an end to Eric Chelle’s plans. On the other hand, Egypt started from very far behind, and given the poor performances since Hossam Hassan’s arrival, expectations around the Pharaohs were already low. Still, this semifinal exit brings Egypt closer to the haunting prospect of never delivering another continental title to their legend, Mohamed Salah.
