Review of AFCON – Day 2

The rest of Group A and Group B were in action today. Let’s take a look back at the key moments from this Day 2 of AFCON 2025.

Salah Saves Egypt

After a hard-fought battle, Egypt snatched a last-minute win against Zimbabwe. Following a strong start marked by fluid passing and movement, Egypt were stunned by Zimbabwe’s opening goal. Dube turned brilliantly with a well-taken first touch before finishing calmly to the goalkeeper’s right. Egypt went through a shaky spell, prompting head coach Hossam Hassan to make an early change in the 30th minute, bringing on Ashour for striker Mostafa Mohamed. Egypt went into halftime trailing but relied on their stars to turn the match around. Marmoush, often benched at Manchester City, equalized with a solo effort, firing past the goalkeeper at the near post. Then, deep into stoppage time, Salah delivered the winner, securing victory for the Pharaohs, who struggled but ultimately took the three points.

Mali Held by Zambia

As so often, Mali let a victory slip through their fingers. After overwhelming dominance that went unrewarded, including a missed penalty, the Eagles finally broke the deadlock in the 61st minute through Lassine Sinayoko. But Mali were caught out in stoppage time, as Zambia equalized thanks to Patson Daka. Morocco could qualify for the knockout stage as early as matchday two when they face Mali.

South Africa Off to a Strong Start

In an open and entertaining match highlighted by several saves from South African goalkeeper Ronwen Williams, South Africa managed to claim a win. Bafana Bafana opened the scoring through Appollis, before Show equalized for Angola. South Africa kept pushing and eventually secured victory thanks to Foster.

South Africa will face Egypt on Friday in what promises to be a massive showdown.
