Review of AFCON – Day 3

The Democratic Republic of Congo, Senegal, Nigeria, and Tunisia all lived up to their favorite status in today’s matches.

DR Congo Amid Controversy

The Democratic Republic of Congo won the opening match of the day by the narrowest of margins. Théo Bongonda scored the only goal of the game in the 16th minute. DR Congo endured significant pressure from a resilient Benin side, who should have been awarded a penalty for a handball by Congolese captain Mbemba, but the VAR system was unavailable. Surrounded by controversy, DR Congo still got the job done.

A dominant Senegal

A statement win for the 2022 African champions. Facing Botswana, the Lions of Teranga quickly imposed their control on the game. After several missed chances that could have unsettled the Senegalese, Bayern Munich forward Nicolas Jackson struck twice to relieve the pressure. Despite creating an astonishing number of chances, Senegal had to wait until the 90th minute to score their third goal. Chérif Ndiaye beat Goitseone Phoko, who nonetheless put on a show with 14 saves. Without him, the scoreline would have been far heavier, as Senegal displayed impressive attacking intent throughout.

Nigeria Win Without Convincing

Put under pressure by Tanzania, a below-par Nigeria edged a 2–1 victory. The Super Eagles lined up with clear attacking intent, fielding five forwards (Iwobi, Chukwueze, Lookman, Adams, Osimhen), but the performance lacked fluidity. The opening goal came from a set piece, with Ajayi heading home. In the second half, Tanzania equalized through Charles M’Mombwa, sparking doubt among the Nigerians. Those concerns were erased by a moment of magic from Lookman, who sealed the win.

Tunisia Take Care of Business

In a match they dominated from start to finish, Tunisia secured a comfortable and uncontested victory. Superior against a weak Ugandan side, the Carthage Eagles opened the scoring through Ellyes Skhiri. Copenhagen winger Elias Achouri then grabbed a brace. Showing control and composure, Tunisia proved they should not be underestimated.
