Review of AFCON – Day 5

At the heart of a wild day, AFCON delivered its first major clashes, with Egypt vs. South Africa and Morocco vs. Mali taking center stage.

A Timid Morocco Held by a Brave Mali

In the evening showdown at a boiling-hot stadium in Rabat, Morocco hoped for a stronger showing than against Comoros. Instead, the Atlas Lions produced a disastrous start. Overwhelmed by pressure and expectations, Morocco struggled to find rhythm and exposed all the flaws of the Regragui era. Mali focused on counterattacks but above all executed their defensive plan well, lining up with five at the back.

Penalties decided the scoring. For Morocco, a handball allowed Brahim Abdelkader Diaz to score, while in the second half, a clumsy foul by a nervous Jawad El Yamiq gave Lassine Sinayoko the chance to equalize.

Egypt Get the Job Done and Qualify

Egypt became the first nation to qualify for the knockout stage. After a well-managed performance, the Pharaohs defeated a dangerous South Africa side. Strong in the first half, Egypt created chances but lacked efficiency in front of goal. It ultimately took a controversial penalty for Mohamed Salah to convert and break the deadlock. Reduced to ten men after the foolish red card shown to Mohamed Hany, South Africa thought they had earned a penalty of their own in the second half, but the referee applied the law strictly. South Africa failed to respond and disappointed in a match where they actually enjoyed a numerical advantage.

Angola and Comoros: The Day’s Big Losers

Beaten by South Africa, Angola failed to find reassurance with a frustrating draw against Zimbabwe. To secure qualification, Angola will now have to defeat group leaders Egypt. The same scenario applies to Comoros, who lost their opening match and were unable to break a scoreless draw against Zambia.

These results set the stage for a thrilling third matchday.
