Seven days after thumping Atlanta United 4-1 at home, New England Revolution head to Saputo Stadium looking to back up that performance on the road. Marko Mitrović’s side, third in the Eastern Conference on 29 points, showed real attacking conviction against Atlanta. The question on Saturday night is whether they can repeat it against a Montreal team that has not scored in an MLS match since May 23. Philippe Eullaffroy’s side, beaten 1-0 by Inter Miami last weekend, sit 13th on 15 points and are running out of season to change that.
What’s at stake
The gap in the Eastern Conference table is 14 points: New England are third on 29 from 16 games, Montreal 13th on 15 from 17. With nine of the fifteen Eastern clubs reaching the playoffs, the Revolution are playing for seeding — Nashville lead the conference on 39, Inter Miami are second on 37 — while Montreal are seven points behind eighth-placed New York Red Bulls with half the season still to play. Points now decide which of those two conversations each club is still having in September.
For Montreal, a home win would end a two-game MLS losing run and, more to the point, end a scoreless streak that now runs to three league matches: 0-0 against Toronto, 0-1 at Nashville, 0-1 to Inter Miami. For New England, a road result would confirm the Atlanta win was a step forward rather than a one-off, and would be their first back-to-back league wins of the summer.
How they got here
Montreal’s last five competitive results read W-W-D-L-L, but the two wins came in the Canadian Championship against Vancouver FC, 2-1 in each leg. In MLS it has been a scoreless July: 0-0 with Toronto FC on July 16, 0-1 at Nashville on July 23, 0-1 at home to Inter Miami on July 25. Their last league goals came in the 4-4 draw at DC United on May 23. New England have played twice since the break, the 4-1 against Atlanta on July 25 and a 0-0 with Toronto FC three days earlier; the two scheduled friendlies against Polessya and Widzew Łódź were cancelled. Their last MLS away game was a 0-1 defeat at Charlotte on May 23.
The fixture itself has been anything but predictable. New England won 3-0 at home in April this year, Montreal won 3-1 in Foxborough in July 2025, and New England had won 3-0 at Saputo two months before that. Across the last ten meetings in all competitions Montreal lead 5-4 with one draw, and three of the last four were decided by at least two goals. Big margins in both directions, in other words, and not much of a structural edge for either side.
Key battle to watch
Carles Gil is the creative reference in the New England midfield, and he opened the scoring after 11 minutes against Atlanta. If he finds the same pockets at Saputo, Montreal’s midfield will have to track him further from goal than it managed against Inter Miami. The other half of the equation is at the opposite end: a Montreal side that has not scored in three league games has to create something out of possession it has struggled to keep. Whether this match opens up or stays tight probably depends on which of those two problems gets solved first.

Montreal have been beaten 3-0 at Saputo by this opponent as recently as May 2025, and they arrive without an MLS goal in three matches. New England, fourteen points better off and coming off a 4-1, look the likelier side to score first. A low-scoring game is the sensible expectation — Montreal have at least kept it to one goal conceded in each of their last two — with the visitors edging it if Gil gets the same freedom he had against Atlanta.
