The UEFA Champions League knockout stage always delivers some of the most compelling matchups in world soccer, and the Round of 16 clash between Bayer Leverkusen and Arsenal promises to be no exception. The first leg will take place on March 11, 2026, at the BayArena in Germany, where the Bundesliga side will try to upset one of the tournament favorites.

With Arsenal enjoying an outstanding season domestically and in Europe, the English side arrives as the clear favorite. However, Leverkusen has shown throughout the campaign that it is capable of competing with Europe’s elite.

Alex Grimaldo of Bayer 04 Leverkusen celebrates scoring his team’s third goal with teammates during the UEFA Champions League 2025/26 League Phase MD8 match between Bayer 04 Leverkusen and Villarreal CF at BayArena on January 28, 2026 in Leverkusen, Germany.
Martin Odegaard, Mikel Merino, Thomas Partey and teammates of Arsenal celebrates the 1st goal during the Premier League match between Arsenal FC and Chelsea FC at Emirates Stadium on March 16, 2025 in London, England.

The road to the round of 16

The 2024–25 Champions League introduced the expanded league phase format, which saw all participating teams compete in a single table before the knockout rounds began. This year saw this format be chosen again, the league phase ran from September to January, determining which clubs advanced directly to the Round of 16 and which had to go through the play-offs.

Arsenal navigated the league phase with remarkable consistency. Mikel Arteta’s team combined defensive solidity with attacking efficiency, finishing 1st with 8 wins in as many games. The Gunners scored freely throughout the competition, recording 23 goals and conceding just four during the earlier stages of the tournament.

Leverkusen, meanwhile, took a slightly more complicated path to reach the knockout rounds. After finishing outside the automatic qualification spots in the league phase (16th), the German side had to battle through the Champions League play-offs. Their performances in those decisive matches (2-0 win agg. against Olympiacos) demonstrated resilience and attacking quality, allowing them to secure their place among the final 16 teams.

The draw ultimately paired the Bundesliga club with Arsenal, setting up a fascinating encounter between two sides known for their attacking style.

Arsenal : a team built to win the Champions League ?

Arsenal’s transformation under manager Mikel Arteta has been one of the most impressive developments in European football over the past few seasons. The London club now combines tactical discipline, technical quality, and depth across nearly every position.

Heading into this tie, Arsenal is also enjoying excellent domestic form. The Gunners currently sit comfortably at the top of the Premier League and are riding a strong run of results, including a long unbeaten away streak that highlights their ability to perform in hostile environments.

Arteta’s team is built around a dynamic midfield and an explosive attack. Declan Rice continues to anchor the midfield with authority, while Martin Zubimendi provides creativity and control. Further forward, Arsenal’s attacking trio combines pace, technical ability, and clinical finishing.

Brazilian winger Gabriel Martinelli has been particularly effective in Europe this season, emerging as one of the team’s top scorers in the competition.

Another key figure is Swedish striker Viktor Gyökeres, whose physical presence and goal-scoring instincts give Arsenal a true focal point in attack. Alongside Bukayo Saka and players like Noni Madueke or Leandro Trossard, Arsenal possesses one of the most dangerous offensive units in the Champions League.

However, Arteta will need to manage his squad carefully. A congested fixture schedule and minor injury concerns have affected some players in recent weeks, with a few defensive rotations already necessary in domestic competitions.

Despite these challenges, Arsenal enters the matchup with confidence and high expectations.

Bayer Leverkusen’s dangerous attack

Bayer Leverkusen may be considered underdogs in this tie, but the German club has built a squad capable of troubling any opponent.

Leverkusen’s success in recent years has been built around a balanced approach that mixes attacking creativity with tactical flexibility. The team has several players capable of producing decisive moments.

Striker Patrik Schick remains the focal point of the attack, providing aerial strength and clinical finishing in the box. Meanwhile, attacking players such as Ibrahim Maza bring pace and unpredictability to the forward line.

One of Leverkusen’s most influential players is left-back Alejandro Grimaldo. Known for his attacking runs and set-piece delivery, Grimaldo has contributed both goals and assists during the Champions League campaign, making him a constant threat down the flank.

Leverkusen’s midfield also plays a crucial role in linking defense and attack. Players like Aleix García provide vision and passing range, helping the German side maintain possession and create scoring opportunities.

Still, the biggest challenge for Leverkusen may be dealing with Arsenal’s defensive structure. The Gunners have conceded very few goals in the Champions League this season, highlighting their organization and discipline.

Predicted lineups

Alejandro Grimaldo of Leverkusen celebrates after scoring his teams second goal during the Bundesliga match between SC Freiburg and Bayer 04 Leverkusen at Europa-Park Stadion on March 07, 2026 in Freiburg im Breisgau, Germany.
Declan Rice of Arsenal during the Premier League match between Brighton & Hove Albion and Arsenal at Amex Stadium on March 04, 2026 in Brighton, England.

Both managers are expected to field strong lineups for this crucial first leg.

Bayer Leverkusen (Possible XI – 3-4-2-1)

Blaswich
Quansah – Andrich – Tapsoba
Vazquez – Palacios – Aleix García – Grimaldo
Hofmann – Maza
Schick

Arsenal (Possible XI – 4-3-3)

Raya
Timber – Saliba – Gabriel – Hincapié
Rice – Zubimendi – Eze
Saka – Gyökeres – Martinelli

Arsenal’s midfield trio could be key to controlling the tempo of the match, while Leverkusen will rely on transitions and wide attacks to create chances.

Tactical battle

One of the most interesting aspects of this matchup will be the tactical contrast between the two sides.

Arsenal prefers structured possession and high pressing. Arteta’s system emphasizes quick passing combinations and aggressive positioning from full-backs, which allows the team to overload wide areas.

Leverkusen, on the other hand, often thrives in transitional situations. With players like Jeremie Frimpong and Grimaldo pushing forward from the flanks, the German club can quickly turn defense into attack.

This tactical clash could make for an open and entertaining match, especially in the first leg where Leverkusen will try to take advantage of home support.

What’s at stake

Players of Bayer 04 Leverkusen pose for a team photo prior to the UEFA Champions League 2025/26 League Knockout Play-off Second Leg match between Bayer 04 Leverkusen and Olympiacos FC at BayArena on February 24, 2026 in Leverkusen, Germany.
Bukayo Saka of Arsenal celebrates scoring his team’s first goal with teammate Cristhian Mosquera during the Premier League match between Brighton & Hove Albion and Arsenal at Amex Stadium on March 04, 2026 in Brighton, England.

For Arsenal, this Champions League campaign represents a genuine opportunity to compete for the trophy. The club has spent years rebuilding under Arteta, and many observers now believe the team is ready to challenge Europe’s best.

Advancing past Leverkusen would bring Arsenal one step closer to a potential first Champions League title in club history.

For Leverkusen, the stakes are slightly different. While the German club may not be among the tournament favorites, a victory over Arsenal would be a statement result and one of the biggest European achievements in recent club history.

Final thoughts

On paper, Arsenal clearly enters the tie as the stronger side. Their squad depth, tactical structure, and current form make them one of the most dangerous teams left in the competition.

However, knockout football often produces surprises, and Bayer Leverkusen has enough quality to cause problems, especially at home in the first leg.

If Arsenal can control possession and limit Leverkusen’s transitions, they should leave Germany with a positive result. But if the Bundesliga side manages to exploit space behind Arsenal’s attacking full-backs, this Round of 16 clash could become far more competitive than many expect.

One thing is certain: with attacking talent on both sides and a place in the Champions League quarterfinals at stake, this matchup has all the ingredients for a thrilling European night.
