Dean Smith’s Charlotte FC and interim-coached CF Montreal meet at Bank of America Stadium on October 28 in a match that could shift the Eastern Conference playoff picture in its final weeks. Montreal arrive under Philippe Eullaffroy, a coach still finding his footing in a role he did not expect to hold this deep into the season. Both clubs need points, and neither can afford to hand them over in a direct clash at this stage of the Regular Season.
What’s at stake
With Round 32 of the MLS Regular Season underway, the Eastern Conference playoff race remains congested enough that a single result can move a club two or three spots in the table. The top nine in the East advance to the postseason, and the margin between a safe berth and a nervy final-day scramble has been razor-thin for several teams throughout this stretch of the calendar.
For Charlotte, a home win would consolidate their standing and potentially put distance between themselves and the clubs chasing from below. For Montreal, arriving with an interim coach already signals a difficult campaign, and dropping points on the road could push them further from the playoff line at a moment when there is little room left for error.
How they got here
Charlotte have had a mixed campaign under Dean Smith, a manager better known for his work in the English Football League who has been tasked with building Charlotte into a genuine MLS contender. The club has shown enough quality at home to give them a platform, but consistency away from Bank of America Stadium has been harder to maintain. Smith will be looking for a performance that reflects their best football.
Montreal’s season took a significant turn when their previous head coach departed and Eullaffroy stepped in on an interim basis. That kind of instability mid-season rarely produces ideal results on the road, and the Quebecois side have had to manage personnel and tactical uncertainty simultaneously. Where they stand in the East heading into this fixture makes the trip to North Carolina feel like a must-not-lose.
Key battle to watch
The central midfield contest will likely determine the tempo of this game. Charlotte at home tend to want to control possession and build from the back under Smith’s structured approach. Montreal, operating under an interim setup, may lack the tactical clarity to press high with conviction for a full 90 minutes. If Charlotte’s midfield wins the second-ball battle early, they could dictate the match and expose a Montreal side that has had limited time to drill a coherent defensive shape under Eullaffroy.

Our Prediction
Home advantage and a more settled coaching setup give Charlotte the edge here. Smith’s side have enough quality to control this game in front of their own fans, and Montreal’s interim status introduces too many unknowns for confidence on the road. Expect Charlotte to take the points, though a well-organized Montreal defensive block could keep it close through the first half.
