DC United host Cincinnati three days after losing to the same opponent

Chris Yohou Avatar

Three days after a 1-2 home loss at Cincinnati’s TQL Stadium, DC United welcome FC Cincinnati straight back to Audi Field for Round 31 of the MLS regular season. René Weiler’s side have now lost three of their last four league matches and sit 13th in the Eastern Conference with 33 points, well outside the nine playoff spots. Cincinnati arrive in Washington off the back of that same win, carrying confidence into what is effectively a back-to-back against the same opponent in the space of 72 hours.

DC United vs FC Cincinnati

What’s at stake

FC Cincinnati occupy eighth place in the Eastern Conference with 39 points from 30 games, right on the playoff cut-off line. The top nine teams in each conference advance to the postseason, and Cincinnati currently hold the last qualifying spot, three points clear of ninth-place New York Red Bulls, who also have 30 games played. A win at Audi Field would give Pat Noonan’s side breathing room heading into the final stretch of the regular season.

For DC United, playoff qualification is not a realistic conversation at this stage: they sit 13th on 33 points, six behind New York Red Bulls in ninth. That gap, combined with their recent form, makes the arithmetic difficult. The priority for Weiler is to stop the slide and find some consistency at home, where the atmosphere at Audi Field has not translated into results of late.

How they got here

DC United’s last five competitive results read L-L-W-L-L (most recent first in MLS play): a 1-2 defeat at Cincinnati, a 1-4 loss at Orlando City, a 2-1 home win over New York Red Bulls, a 0-4 hammering at Inter Miami, and a 0-1 friendly loss to SC Paderborn. Only that Red Bulls result offers any encouragement, and it is sandwiched between heavy defeats. Cincinnati’s recent form is similarly patchy: W-L-L-W-L. They beat DC United on Tuesday, but also dropped back-to-back home games against Columbus Crew (0-2) and New England Revolution (2-3) before that.

In the Eastern Conference standings, Nashville SC lead the table by a wide margin with 67 points, followed by Inter Miami on 55 and New England Revolution on 52. Cincinnati’s 39 points leave them 28 points off the top but, more relevantly, just three ahead of New York Red Bulls in ninth. Toronto FC, one place above the Red Bulls, also has 36 points. The playoff picture in the bottom half of the top nine remains tight.

Key battle to watch

Cincinnati’s attack has been prolific over the course of the season, with 62 goals scored but 71 conceded in 30 games, a profile that suggests both teams will look to press and transition quickly. DC United’s defensive record is even leakier: 53 goals against in 30 games. The central defensive pairing for Weiler will need to manage Kouadio Koné Denkey and the movement around him far better than they did in Tuesday’s defeat. If Cincinnati’s forwards can win the same battles in behind that they exploited three days ago, a comfortable away result becomes very plausible.

Our Prediction

Cincinnati arrive with the confidence of a team that already beat this opponent on Tuesday and with a clear playoff incentive to take three more points. DC United’s defensive frailties and poor recent form make it hard to back them at home. Cincinnati should have enough to win this one, though the turnaround schedule and the volatile nature of both teams’ back lines means goals at both ends are likely.
