Houston Dynamo host St. Louis City with fourth place on the line

Chris Yohou Avatar

Houston got thumped 3-1 at Portland five days ago, and they have not shaken the memory of that result yet. Ben Olsen’s side were outplayed in what was a rough end to a road trip, and they return to Shell Energy Stadium on Saturday facing a St. Louis City team that is sitting directly above them in the Western Conference table on goal difference alone. Both clubs have 51 points from 33 matches. Fourth place versus fifth place, separated by nothing but goals scored.

What’s at stake

In the Western Conference, the top nine sides qualify for the MLS playoffs. Houston (fifth, 51 pts) and St. Louis City (fourth, 51 pts) are both comfortably inside that bracket, so there is no playoff panic here. What is very much alive is the seeding question. The difference between fourth and fifth matters: a higher seed typically earns home advantage in the first round, and in a one-legged knockout format that edge is real. Vancouver Whitecaps lead the conference on 61 points, with FC Dallas on 55 and San Jose Earthquakes on 52. Neither Houston nor St. Louis is catching those clubs, but the race to finish as cleanly as possible in the bracket is worth playing for.

A win for Houston would flip the table and put them above St. Louis on points, with goal difference almost certainly deciding who takes fourth and who drops to fifth. A St. Louis win, meanwhile, would open a three-point gap and let them look down with some breathing room as the regular season enters its final stretch. Los Angeles FC sit sixth on 47 points, so neither side is in any danger of being dragged lower, but neither can afford to drift if they want better seeding.

How they got here

Houston’s last five in league play read W-D-D-W-L (most recent last): they beat Seattle on the road, drew at home with Minnesota, shared points with FC Dallas, then lost at Portland. The Portland defeat was the blot, a 3-1 loss in which the Dynamo were second best. St. Louis City’s recent form is harder to look at: four straight losses in the league, the most recent a 0-1 home defeat to San Diego a week ago. Before that they were beaten 2-3 by Portland at home and hammered 0-3 at Real Salt Lake. Yoann Damet’s side has shipped ten goals in three league matches.

St. Louis currently sit fourth with 51 points, identical to Houston’s tally. Houston’s goal difference is minus one (43 scored, 42 conceded); St. Louis have a positive difference of plus ten (58 scored, 48 conceded), which is what separates them in the standings right now. That goal difference gap is the quiet subplot of this match: Houston cannot close it in one game, but they can at least start their own run and hope St. Louis continue to bleed goals.

Key battle to watch

Rafael Navarro has 19 league goals this season, putting him level with Nashville SC’s Sam Surridge in the MLS scoring chart and second in the Western Conference behind Vancouver’s Brian White. If St. Louis are going to break their four-match losing run, Navarro needs service and space. Houston’s center-backs Antônio Carlos and Lucas Halter will be the ones tasked with keeping him quiet. Carlos brings experience and composure in the air; Halter is the more aggressive presser. How that back line handles Navarro in and around the box will likely determine whether St. Louis can halt their slide or whether the Dynamo capitalize on a visiting side that has shipped ten goals in its last three league outings.

Head To Head

Our Prediction

St. Louis City’s form is genuinely concerning: four league losses on the bounce, a backline conceding freely, and a road trip to a Dynamo side that is motivated after getting beaten up in Portland. Houston at home has been steadier, and the crowd at Shell Energy Stadium after a rough result away tends to push the team early. St. Louis have the firepower to nick something, Navarro in particular, but their defensive fragility makes it hard to back them to grind out a result. Expect Houston to control enough of this match to take three points and leapfrog their visitors in the standings.
