Manchester City 1-1 Chelsea

Tijjani Reijnders 42′ for Manchester City. Enzo Fernández 90’+4 for Chelsea.

Enzo Fernandez of Chelsea celebrates scoring his team’s first goal during the Premier League match between Manchester City and Chelsea at Etihad Stadium on January 04, 2026 in Manchester, England.

In a difficult context following the recent dismissal of Enzo Maresca, Chelsea’s players traveled to Manchester City who are in search of points in the title race with Arsenal (and Aston Villa).

With the absences of Cucurella and Caicedo, it was even tougher for Chelsea on the paper. In the first half, both teams were trying to find the solutions. Manchester City had the ball possession and the best chances but were unable to score, until the 42′ minute when Reijnders found the net and helped Manchester to open the scoreline.

In the second half, things changed. Chelsea looked determined and focused. Interim manager Calum McFarlane must have motivated his players in a great way as the Blues played way better and could have equalized multiple times. And at the same time Manchester City were unable to create more chances.

Chelsea saw their efforts pay off in extra time as Enzo Fernandez scored the equaliser at the 90’+4 minute to help Chelsea take a massive point against one of the two best teams in the league, and in a complicated intern context.

With this draw, Manchester City stagnate at the 2nd place with 42 points and are now 6 points behind Arsenal. Chelsea are 5th with 31 points.
