Napoli head to Estadio de la Ceramica looking to bounce back in the UCL

Chris Yohou Avatar

Three days after dismantling Frosinone 3-0 in Serie A, Napoli travel to Estadio de la Ceramica on Tuesday carrying a confidence that their Champions League campaign has not yet matched. Massimiliano Allegri’s side lost their opening UCL fixture 1-0 to Arsenal and need a result in Spain to keep pace with the top half of the league stage table. Villarreal, meanwhile, are licking their wounds after a 1-0 defeat at Real Madrid last weekend, a result that compounded a frustrating start in Europe following their own opening-round loss at Borussia Dortmund. Neither team can afford another blank against a 36-club table where only the top 24 advance.

Match action

What’s at stake

The revamped UEFA Champions League league stage sends 24 of the 36 participating clubs into the knockout rounds, with the top eight earning a direct berth in the last 16 and clubs ranked ninth through 24th entering a two-legged playoff. After one matchday, both Villarreal and Napoli sit on zero points following opening defeats, while half the field has already recorded a win. The window to reach the qualification threshold is wide open at this stage, but dropping further behind the chasing pack makes the mathematics progressively harder in a competition with limited rounds to recover.

A Villarreal win at home would give Inigo Perez’s side a foothold and some breathing room heading into the second half of their league stage schedule. For Napoli, three points would put them back in contention for a playoff spot at minimum and ease what could become a congested situation in the lower half of the table. A second consecutive loss, for either side, would not be fatal in a long-format stage, but it would shift the pressure significantly onto the remaining fixtures.

Villarreal vs Napoli

How they got here

Villarreal’s last five results paint a mixed picture. Perez’s side won back-to-back La Liga games in September, 3-1 at Malaga and then 3-1 over Levante at home, before losing 2-1 to Real Betis at the Ceramica. The 3-2 defeat in Dortmund opened their UCL account on a sour note, and the 1-0 loss at Real Madrid last Saturday offered little in the way of positive carry-over. Napoli’s recent run is more encouraging domestically. Allegri’s squad beat Bologna 1-0 at home, drew 1-1 at Fiorentina, then put Frosinone away with authority, 3-0. The problem is their sole UCL appearance ended in a 1-0 defeat at the hands of Arsenal, so the continental form is yet to click.

Both squads enter this game without a point on the UCL board after one match played. Napoli’s Serie A form gives them a psychological edge, while Villarreal will draw on home advantage and the fact that the Ceramica has historically been a difficult venue for visiting sides in European competition.

Key battle to watch

The midfield contest will likely decide this game. Napoli’s engine room of Stan Lobotka and Scott McTominay, with Kevin De Bruyne operating in a more advanced role, is one of the most technically complete trios in the competition. Villarreal will need Santi Comesaña and Pape Gueye to be aggressive in pressing and transition to prevent De Bruyne from receiving the ball in pockets of space. If Napoli’s midfield can control tempo the way they did against Frosinone, Allegri’s side will create enough chances to threaten. Villarreal’s best route is to use the width, with Ilias Akhomach and Ayoze Pérez offering pace on the flanks, and find Gerard Moreno early in dangerous positions before the Italian defensive line can set.

Our Prediction

This shapes up as a tight game between two teams that are low on European confidence but not short of domestic-level quality. Napoli’s midfield depth and the momentum from the Frosinone result give them a slight edge, though Villarreal at the Ceramica rarely make it easy for anyone. Expect a cagey first half with the deciding moments likely coming from individual quality rather than systemic dominance, with Napoli edging it.
