Orlando City arrive at Gillette three days after Open Cup exit, with Eastern Conference stakes rising

Chris Yohou Avatar

Three days after falling 2-1 to Columbus Crew in the US Open Cup semi-finals, Orlando City SC head to Gillette Stadium with legs still heavy and a result to put behind them. The Lions cannot dwell on that loss for long, though: at sixth in the Eastern Conference with 34 points, they sit just two points clear of a more uncertain playoff position. New England, third on 43 points, are themselves looking over their shoulders at Charlotte and Chicago Fire breathing down their necks, making this a sharper contest than the standings gap might suggest.

New England Revolution vs Orlando City SC

What’s at stake

New England sit third in the Eastern Conference on 43 points after 25 matches, two points behind second-place Inter Miami (45) and 11 behind leaders Nashville SC (54). Charlotte are fourth on 40 and Chicago Fire fifth on 39, meaning the Revs hold only a three-point cushion over the teams just outside the top seeds. In a conference where nine teams qualify for the playoffs, staying in the upper half matters for seeding: the top seven secure a 1/8-final berth while those in eighth and ninth drop into a 1/16-final round.

A win for New England would push them closer to consolidating a top-three finish and the home-ground advantage that comes with it in the postseason. For Orlando, three points would be equally welcome: at 34 points and sixth, they are safe inside the nine-team playoff bracket for now, but Philadelphia Union (33) and New York City FC (32) are close enough that a slip could see the Lions squeezed. Dropping points at Gillette, especially on the back of an Open Cup exit, would increase the pressure on interim coach Martin Perelman.

How they got here

New England have been one of the more consistent sides in the East over the past month. Their last five outings in all competitions read W-W-L-W-D, with back-to-back away wins over New York City FC (2-1) and Chicago Fire (2-1) giving them real confidence on the road. Their only blemish in that run was a 1-2 defeat at Los Angeles Galaxy. At home, Marko Mitrovic’s side will be looking to replicate that road form on their own patch. Orlando’s last five tell a slightly different story: three straight MLS wins over Minnesota United (3-3 draw), San Diego (1-0), Atlanta United (3-2) and Toronto (3-0) had built real confidence in league play, but the Open Cup semi-final loss at Columbus Crew on September 16 interrupted that rhythm just before this trip north.

In the Eastern Conference, New England (3rd, 43 pts) are two points off second-placed Inter Miami and three clear of Charlotte in fourth. Orlando (6th, 34 pts) are nine points behind the Revs, a gap that reflects the difference in where each club sits in terms of seeding ambitions rather than playoff qualification itself.

Key battle to watch

Orlando have been porous at the back this season, conceding 56 goals in 25 Eastern Conference matches, by far the leakiest defense in the top six. New England’s attack, which has found the net 41 times at the other end, will look to test that vulnerability early. Carles Gil’s ability to pick passes through tight lines and create openings for runners like L. Campana will be the central tactical question: if Gil gets time on the ball in central areas, Orlando’s midfield, which has already shipped big numbers on the road this season, will struggle to contain the combinations Mitrovic’s side can produce.

Head To Head

Our Prediction

Orlando’s recent Open Cup exit adds fatigue and a psychological edge to this game that New England can press. The head-to-head record strongly favors the Lions (six wins in the last ten meetings), but that run was built in different circumstances and with a settled bench. With Perelman still finding his footing as interim coach and Orlando’s defense the shakiest in the Eastern Conference top six, New England look well-placed to grind out a result at home and put pressure on Inter Miami above them.
