It was the most anticipated match of the Spanish season: the league’s top two sides, separated by fine margins and with the summit on the line. Real had the chance to move five points clear, while a Barcelona win would have seen the Blaugrana reclaim first place.
Though Barça dominated possession, Real dictated the game in intent and threat. Sitting deep and striking on the counter, Madrid targeted Barcelona’s defensive frailties with precision. Mbappé had an early goal ruled out after a Fermin López turnover, but the Frenchman eventually punished the same weakness, capitalizing on another Catalan lapse to open the scoring. At halftime, Madrid led — and truthfully, the margin could have been greater. Even after Mbappé missed a penalty early in the second half, the hosts maintained control. Barcelona, toothless in attack, rarely troubled the Madrid defense, with their best chance falling to center-back Ronald Araújo.
How far away that dark September afternoon now seems — the day Real collapsed collectively at the Metropolitano against Atlético. Since then, Alonso’s Madrid have rediscovered their identity: structured, ruthless, and very much in charge of La Liga.
