Son Heung-min opens the scoring but LAFC’s low block does the rest in 3-1 win over Real Salt Lake

Chris Yohou Avatar

Los Angeles FC produced one of the more statistically paradoxical wins of their MLS season on Wednesday night, beating Real Salt Lake 3-1 at BMO Stadium while holding just 29% possession and being outshot 28 to 12. Son Heung-min broke the deadlock in the 11th minute, Denis Bouanga doubled the lead before halftime, and although DeAndre Yedlin’s own goal gave RSL brief hope in the second half, Lukas Engel’s 86th-minute consolation was not enough to change the result. LAFC move to 30 points and hold third place in the Western Conference, two points behind Vancouver Whitecaps and San Jose Earthquakes at the top.

Key Moments

  • 11′, Son Heung-min puts LAFC ahead with a normal goal, giving the hosts an early advantage against the run of play.
  • 40′, Denis Bouanga doubles the lead just before the break, leaving Real Salt Lake with a steep hill to climb despite their territorial dominance.
  • 68′, DeAndre Yedlin turns the ball into his own net, cutting the deficit to 2-1 and giving RSL a foothold in the second half.
  • 86′, Lukas Engel scores for Real Salt Lake, but with only minutes remaining it amounts to a consolation in a 3-1 defeat.

Tactical Breakdown

LAFC’s numbers defy easy explanation. Guillermo Hoyos’s side registered an xG of just 1.17 against Real Salt Lake’s 2.56, were outpassed 703 to 295, and conceded 12 corner kicks to their seven. Yet they went into halftime 2-0 up and managed Hugo Lloris’s five saves throughout the night with enough composure to see it out. The 4-3-3 setup absorbed pressure efficiently, kept shooting lanes tight, and punished RSL on the counter twice in the opening 40 minutes.

The double substitution at the 64th minute, with Jacob Shaffelburg and Mathieu Choiniere coming off, suggested LAFC were looking to shore up midfield and sit deeper. RSL’s own changes, including Stijn Spierings at the same mark and Diego Luna and Sergi Solans later on, injected more possession-based urgency, but their finishing remained wasteful: 28 total shots produced only six on target. The own goal at 68 minutes tightened things, but LAFC held the defensive shape long enough to keep RSL at arm’s length.

For Real Salt Lake, the numbers were there. Seventy-one percent possession, 91% passing accuracy, 12 corners, and a strong xG figure of 2.56 amounted to very little. The issue was not volume but precision in the final third. Converted chances came almost entirely via a set piece situation late on rather than the open-play combinations RSL had been building throughout. Pablo Mastroeni’s side now sit fourth with 26 points from 15 games, level with FC Dallas on points.

Player Ratings

Son Heung-min
7.5/10. Gave LAFC the lead in the 11th minute and was a constant outlet on the counter before being withdrawn at 72.
Denis Bouanga
7.5/10. Added the second goal just before halftime to effectively put the match to bed, giving LAFC the cushion they needed.
Hugo Lloris
7.5/10. Five saves against a side that fired 28 shots; without him the scoreline would have looked very different.
DeAndre Yedlin
4.5/10. The own goal at 68 minutes briefly reopened the contest and summed up a difficult night for the RSL defender.
Lukas Engel
6.0/10. Got on the scoresheet in the 86th minute but RSL needed goals far earlier; the consolation arrived too late to matter.

Standings

Head To Head

Verdict

The win lifts LAFC to 30 points from 17 games, keeping them two points off the pace set by Vancouver and San Jose at the top of the West. Real Salt Lake, still fourth with games in hand, will be frustrated by a performance that generated real chances but was let down by finishing in a match they dominated on paper. Both sides remain firmly in the playoff picture, though LAFC’s ability to win while being comprehensively outplayed raises questions that will serve them well through the back half of the regular season.
