Stuttgart host Atletico three days after Bundesliga slip

Match action

Three days after a 1-0 loss at Hamburger SV in the Bundesliga, VfB Stuttgart return to European action at the MHPArena on Tuesday. Sebastian Hoeneß’s side have collected six points from their opening two Champions League games, but the defeat in Hamburg took the edge off any early-season confidence. Standing in their way is Diego Simeone’s Atletico Madrid, who arrive off the back of a 1-0 win at Espanyol and have won four of their last five across all competitions.

What’s at stake

With only two matchdays played in the new single-league Champions League format, positions shift quickly. Stuttgart’s six points already put them in strong shape for a direct knockout-round berth, but three points on Tuesday would give them a cushion that only a handful of teams in the 36-team field currently enjoy. For Atletico, who have three points after a win over Manchester United and a loss in their other fixture, a victory in Stuttgart would get them back level with the early pacesetters.

A Stuttgart win keeps their UCL record perfect and gives Hoeneß’s squad breathing room before the schedule tightens. A loss would bring Atletico level on points with Stuttgart and pile pressure on Stuttgart’s remaining home fixtures. For Simeone, three points would reframe Atletico’s campaign after an uneven start and quiet concerns about their European ceiling this season.

How they got here

Stuttgart’s last five results read W-W-W-W-L, with the only blemish that away defeat in Hamburg on October 17. Before that, they beat Slovan Bratislava 3-0 away in the UCL and won 2-0 at SC Paderborn in the Bundesliga, so the underlying form is solid even if the Hamburg result stung. Ermedin Demirovic leads the Champions League scoring charts among Stuttgart’s attackers and has four goals in the competition this season. Atletico, by contrast, have gone W-W-W-W-L across their last five, with wins over Real Madrid, Alaves, Manchester United and Espanyol before a loss somewhere in that run.

Stuttgart come in having won both their UCL matches, picking up all six available points. Atletico have three from two, splitting wins and losses. The gap in early UCL form is real, but Simeone’s record in knockout-pressure road games is well established, and the Atletico squad carries names like Julian Alvarez, Jonathan David and Ademola Lookman who are capable of deciding a match individually.

Key battle to watch

Stuttgart’s attacking fluency, built around Demirovic and Christopher Führich in wide areas, will run into an Atletico defensive structure that Simeone typically organizes around compactness and hard transition pressure. If Atletico can deny Stuttgart space in behind and force them into wide play, they have the personnel on the counter, particularly with Lookman and Alvarez, to punish any Stuttgart defensive line that pushes high. Hoeneß will need his midfield, likely anchored by Anton Stiller and Atakan Karazor, to win second balls and stop Atletico from dictating tempo in the middle third.

Our Prediction

Stuttgart’s home record and the fact that Atletico are still finding their footing in this competition both point toward a tight match where the hosts have the slight edge. Atletico’s defensive discipline under Simeone rarely allows for heavy defeats, so expect a close, low-scoring game. Stuttgart are well-placed to take all three points, but a draw would not be a surprise given the quality Simeone can organize from the back.
