Fifa World Cup 2026 : Is Spain already a favorite ?

Spain now stand as one of the clear favorites for the 2026 World Cup. Powered by a dominant qualification campaign and coming off a brilliant triumph at Euro 2024, La Roja are no longer just an aesthetically pleasing team nostalgic of the Xavi Iniesta and Xabi era — they have become a goal-scoring machine.

A style between tradition and modernity

Long tied to a sometimes sterile and outdated version of tiki-taka, the 2026 version of Spain is the result of intelligent evolution. Under the leadership of Luis de la Fuente La Roja have preserved their identity built on possession and pressing, while adding a far more vertical dimension.

This transformation is key. Spain no longer just circulate the ball — they now create ruptures, attack space, and finish their chances. The technical profile of players like Pedri combined with the explosiveness of Nico Williams and the intelligent movement of Torres or Morata gives Spain a fluid and dynamic attacking structure.

This balance makes the team unpredictable. They can suffocate opponents through control… or punish them in seconds. It is a clear shift toward modern soccer standards, where efficiency and intensity are essential.

The result is a complete team, capable of adapting to any scenario and scoring in a variety of ways — reminiscent in some ways of Spain’s 2008 side, which already displayed a more vertical approach than commonly remembered.

A dominant cycle and not a one shot

Spain’s rise is not just about style — it is backed by results.

They dominated Euro 2024, winning the tournament convincingly. They carried that momentum into the Nations League where a final defeat to Portugal was overshadowed by a commanding semifinal win over France.

They then cruised through World Cup qualifying, finishing first and unbeaten in their group.

Beyond the standings, it is the manner that impresses, a distributed attack with multiple scorers such as Merino, Williams or Oyarzabal, individual brilliance reinforcing collective dominance and that give the ability to win comfortably, even without key starters or when not fully in control of matches. For example, Spain recorded emphatic wins such as 4–0 against Georgia and 6–0 away in Istanbul against Turkey — clear evidence of their squad depth and collective mastery. Even when challenged, such as against France in the Euro or Nations League semifinals, Spain’s transitional strength allows them to remain dangerous and decisive. This consistency is the hallmark of elite nations: Spain do not rely on one player, but on a flexible, almost chameleon-like system.

Lamine Yamal : a big star

If one player embodies this new Spain, it is him.

At just 18 years old, Lamine Yamal is already far more than a prospect — he is a major attacking weapon and a generational symbol. Having broken through at 16, he has quickly become one of the most decisive players of his generation.

His numbers speak volumes: 14 goals and 9 assists in the 2025–2026 championship season (before the match against Rayo Vallecano) averaging roughly one goal contribution per game.

But beyond the stats, it is his profile that truly fascinates, elite dribbling ability with an almost endless skill set, creativity in both tight and open spaces and the capacity to decide games on his own . Just recall how he tormented France during the Euro 2024 semifinal — a performance that confirmed his status on the biggest stage. Already decisive in major international tournaments, he represents a fearless, ambitious Spain determined to shape the future of the game. In a competition like the World Cup, where individual brilliance often proves decisive, Yamal may well be the ultimate X-factor capable of tipping any match in Spain’s favor.
