Chelsea edge Benfica in tight contest

CHELSEA 1-0 Benfica : Rios O.G 18’

Chelsea came away with the narrowest of victories on Tuesday against Benfica, securing a 1-0 win under Enzo Maresca.

For José Mourinho’s return to Stamford Bridge, the supporters gave a warm ovation to the man who built much of the club’s proud history.

Once the emotional reunion was over, the focus turned to football. Chelsea dominated possession, though Benfica threatened on the counter, particularly through the pace of Dodi Lukebakio. The breakthrough came in the 18th minute: a Neto cross was redirected by Garnacho and inadvertently bundled into his own net by the unfortunate Richard Rios.

That proved to be the game’s only goal. Benfica lacked the resources to equalize, while Chelsea failed to score a second to put the contest beyond doubt.

The Blues’ nerves showed once again, as substitute Joao Pedro—brought on in the 61st minute—was sent off, making it the team’s third red card in four games, despite another victory.
