Houston Dynamo look to stay in Western Conference top four against struggling Galaxy

Chris Yohou Avatar

Seven days after beating New England Revolution 2-0 on the road, Houston Dynamo return to Shell Energy Stadium looking to build on a run that has them sitting fourth in the Western Conference with 32 points. Ben Olsen’s side have gone W-W-W-D-D in their last five league outings, and a home win on Saturday would keep the pressure on the three teams above them, all separated by just two points. Standing in their way is a Los Angeles Galaxy side that has drawn three of its last four MLS matches and sits 12th in the West on 22 points, 10 points adrift of the playoff cutoff.

What’s at stake

Houston sit two points behind third-placed San Jose Earthquakes (33 pts) and two behind the co-leaders Vancouver Whitecaps and Los Angeles FC (both 34 pts), having played one fewer game than LAFC. The Western Conference sends nine teams to the MLS playoffs, so the Dynamo’s place in the postseason is not in immediate danger, but the gap to the top three is tight enough that a home win here could, depending on other results, move them into the top two.

For the Galaxy, the math is less forgiving. Sitting 12th with 22 points from 19 games, they are level on points with Colorado Rapids (11th) and one ahead of San Diego (13th, 21 pts), both having played one fewer game. The top nine qualify, so Greg Vanney’s side need a significant turnaround in form to work their way back into contention. A win at Shell Energy Stadium would be a step in that direction, but a third successive defeat would stretch the gap to the playoff places to a very uncomfortable margin.

How they got here

Houston’s last five competitive matches read W-W-W-D-D: the 2-0 win at New England was the latest piece of a strong mid-season stretch that also included a 2-0 win at Sporting Kansas City and a 3-0 home victory over Austin. The only blemish in MLS action over that period was a 1-1 home draw with DC United. Guilherme, who has 11 league goals this season, has been central to most of what has worked going forward. The Galaxy, by contrast, have taken just one point from their last two league games: a 0-0 draw at home to FC Dallas followed a 1-3 home defeat to St. Louis City and a 0-3 loss to Los Angeles FC. That stretch of D-D-L-L-D in their last five has cooled whatever momentum they had built earlier in the year.

Houston are fourth in the Western Conference on 32 points (10 wins, 2 draws, 6 losses). The Galaxy are 12th on 22 points (5 wins, 7 draws, 7 losses). The head-to-head record over the last 10 meetings is level at 3-3-4, and the last three encounters all ended 1-1, so goals have not always come easy in this fixture.

Key battle to watch

Houston’s attack, built around Guilherme’s 11-goal season, will test a Galaxy defensive unit that has conceded 29 goals in 19 games. Guilherme’s movement in behind and his ability to convert half-chances has been the engine of Olsen’s offense in recent weeks. The Galaxy’s back line, which shipped three goals to both LAFC and St. Louis City in back-to-back home games, will need a much more disciplined performance to keep the Dynamo from extending their winning run at Shell Energy Stadium. If Houston’s midfield can control the tempo through players like Hector Herrera and Artur, the Galaxy’s tendency to concede in transition becomes an even bigger liability on the road.

Our Prediction

Houston’s form, home advantage and Guilherme’s goalscoring form all point in the same direction. The Galaxy have not won in four MLS outings and their defensive numbers on the road give the Dynamo genuine reason for confidence. Expect Houston to control large portions of this game; a home win is the most likely outcome, though the fixture’s habit of producing draws means Vanney’s side could steal a point if they tighten up defensively compared to recent weeks.
