Cincinnati ride NYCFC win into tough home test against struggling Sounders

Chris Yohou Avatar

Three days after knocking off New York City FC 2-1 at TQL Stadium, FC Cincinnati are back in front of their home supporters with a chance to put some distance between themselves and a congested playoff picture. Pat Noonan’s side sit fifth in the Eastern Conference on 30 points, inside the top-nine cutoff but with Charlotte breathing one point behind them. Seattle Sounders arrive in Ohio having lost back-to-back MLS matches, including a 1-2 defeat at home to Austin just two days ago. The gap between these two sides in the standings is six points, but the gap in form feels considerably wider.

What’s at stake

Cincinnati are fifth in the Eastern Conference with 30 points from 20 games, which puts them comfortably inside the nine playoff spots the conference allocates. Their current berth earns a first-round bye into the round-of-16; dropping below eighth would push them into the earlier knockout round. Charlotte sit one point back in sixth, New York City FC are at 26, and the New York Red Bulls have 25, making the standings from fifth to eighth tight enough that a midweek slip can shift the order noticeably. A win here would push Cincinnati to 33 and offer some breathing room before the back end of the regular season.

For Seattle, the picture is starker. Eleventh in the Western Conference on 24 points, they sit level with San Diego and two back of Portland, with the top nine being the playoff threshold. A loss in Cincinnati would deepen a run that has produced five straight defeats across all competitions and leave Brian Schmetzer’s group with a shrinking margin for error on the road.

How they got here

Cincinnati’s last five reads W-D-L-W-W when you account for Leagues Cup mixed in, with the most recent MLS result being that 2-1 home win over NYCFC. The draw came at Orlando City, and the league defeat in that stretch was also on the road. At home in league play, the team has shown enough to stay in contention in a conference that Nashville SC have run away with, currently sitting 16 points clear at the top on 46. Seattle’s recent sequence is harder to spin: four defeats in their last five across all competitions, including back-to-back MLS losses to Vancouver (0-2) and Austin (1-2) at home.

Cincinnati’s 8-6-6 record in the East has them fifth, three points behind New England Revolution in fourth and 16 behind leaders Nashville. Seattle are 7-3-9 in the West on 24 points from 19 games, outside the playoff line and running low on time to change that.

Key battle to watch

Seattle have managed just 21 goals in 19 Western Conference games, one of the lower tallies among playoff contenders, which puts real pressure on their ability to stay compact defensively and convert limited chances. Cincinnati, by contrast, have put up 48 goals for and 46 against, suggesting games at TQL tend to open up. If the Sounders can keep it tight and transition quickly through players like Adam Rusnak and Paul Arriola, they have a chance to make this uncomfortable. If Cincinnati’s midfield, anchored by Obinna Nwobodo and Brandon Bucha, controls possession and keeps the game in front of them, the home side’s attacking numbers suggest they will eventually find a way through.

Our Prediction

Cincinnati have the home advantage, the better recent form in MLS, and a defense that, while not impenetrable, is facing a Seattle attack that has scored 21 goals in 19 games. The Sounders are coming in on short rest after a defeat and carrying five straight losses across competitions. Noonan’s side should control enough of this game to take three points, though Seattle’s defensive resilience in Schmetzer’s setups could keep the margin tighter than Cincinnati’s attacking numbers might suggest.
