Brighton host Leeds looking to bounce back after Chelsea thriller

Chris Yohou Avatar

Six days after conceding four goals at Stamford Bridge in a 4-3 defeat, Brighton return to the Amex Stadium looking to steady things quickly. Leeds arrive in decent shape after a winning start against Nottingham Forest, held only to a draw by Brentford last time out. Fabian Hurzeler’s side have collected 3 points from their opening two Premier League matches, one fewer than Daniel Farke’s Leeds, who have banked 4 points through two games. It is early days in the Premier League season, but neither team wants to let the gap to the top four grow any wider.

What’s at stake

With only two league matches played, the table is already taking shape at the top. Manchester City, Arsenal, Hull City, and Chelsea all have 6 points, and the four Champions League places are looking competitive. The Europa League spot currently belongs to Brentford in fifth on 4 points. Brighton (3 pts, 9th) and Leeds (4 pts, 8th) are both just getting their early-season footing after two games apiece, with Brighton bouncing back from an opening loss and Leeds recovering from a draw, meaning both sides badly need a win here to build real momentum.

A Brighton win closes the gap on Leeds and lifts them level on points with several teams bunched between fifth and ninth. For Leeds, three points would put clear daylight between themselves and the teams below the European spots and send a statement that their opening-weekend win at Nottingham Forest was no accident. A draw does neither side major favors given how much ground the top four are already building.

How they got here

Brighton’s last five competitive results show a side capable of big performances but not yet consistent. They thrashed Aston Villa 4-0 at home in Matchday 1, then drew 0-0 away to Tromso in the Europa Conference League before beating the Norwegian side 4-0 at the Amex. The loss at Chelsea last Saturday, 4-3 in a high-scoring game, showed vulnerabilities at the back that Hurzeler will want addressed. Leeds, meanwhile, beat Nottingham Forest 1-0 away on Matchday 1, knocked Forest out of the League Cup 2-0 at the City Ground, then drew 1-1 at home to Brentford. Farke’s team is unbeaten in league play so far.

Brighton head into this one with 3 points from two games after a loss and a win, while Leeds arrive in slightly better shape with 4 points from two outings following a draw and a win of their own. The top eight spots are tightly grouped, with six teams between fifth and ninth separated by only a point. Leeds hold the slight edge in current form having not lost a league game, while Brighton’s defeat in west London leaves them needing a response on their own turf.

Key battle to watch

Brighton’s attacking output has been exceptional early on, scoring seven goals in two Premier League games. The concern is at the back, where that Chelsea match exposed them to a fast, direct attack. Leeds have been tighter defensively, conceding just once in the league, and Farke tends to set his side up to be compact on the road. How Brighton’s forwards, including Kaoru Mitoma and Georginio Rutter, handle a disciplined Leeds defensive block will likely decide whether the Seagulls get the win their home form demands.

Head To Head

Our Prediction

Brighton’s head-to-head record at the Amex against Leeds is strong, and the motivation to respond after the Chelsea defeat gives them an extra edge at home. Leeds have been solid but have not yet faced a side with Brighton’s attacking firepower in their own stadium. Expect Brighton to control large portions of the game, though Leeds have enough quality on the counter to keep this close. The Seagulls are the likelier side to take all three points, but Farke’s team will not make it straightforward.
