Real Salt Lake host LAFC with four straight losses bleeding their playoff hopes

Chris Yohou Avatar

Four losses in a row have put Real Salt Lake in a precarious spot in the Western Conference, and Saturday’s home date against Los Angeles FC does nothing to ease the pressure. RSL sit tenth in the West with 28 points, one spot outside the playoff cutoff in a conference that sends nine teams to the postseason. LAFC arrive at America First Field third in the standings on 36 points, their own form wobbling after collecting just one win in their last five outings.

Real Salt Lake vs Los Angeles FC

What’s at stake

The Western Conference sends nine teams to the MLS playoffs, and Real Salt Lake are currently on the wrong side of that line. Sitting tenth with 28 points from 21 games, Pablo Mastroeni’s side are one point behind ninth-placed Minnesota United and three behind eighth-placed San Diego. The cluster of teams between seventh and tenth is tight enough that a win here would put RSL right back in the mix, while another defeat would start to stretch the gap to a point where recovery becomes genuinely difficult.

For LAFC, the stakes are different but real. Third place with 36 points looks comfortable on paper, but Marc Dos Santos’ side are only two points ahead of the San Jose-Dallas-St. Louis trio all tied at 34. A stumble on the road, combined with wins from those teams, would drop LAFC into the pack. Vancouver Whitecaps lead the West on 43 points and Houston Dynamo sit second on 39, so the fight for seeding matters: a higher finish means a more favorable playoff bracket.

How they got here

RSL’s last five outings tell a grim story. They drew with Minnesota United at home, then lost four straight: a 3-4 collapse at home to FC Dallas, a road loss at Orlando City, a 3-0 thrashing by Leon in the Leagues Cup, and last weekend’s 1-0 defeat at Colorado Rapids. The defense has been porous across that run, and the loss at Colorado stings given it was a direct six-pointer against a conference rival just above them in the table.

LAFC’s recent form is not much better. After drawing with Club Queretaro in the Leagues Cup, they lost back-to-back league games at home to San Diego and away at Colorado before drawing with Portland and going goalless at DC United last Saturday. They are winless in their last four, and that 0-0 at DC United was the kind of result that does nothing for confidence heading into a road trip. Still, 36 points and third place is a position most Western Conference teams would take at this stage.

Key battle to watch

LAFC’s defensive record is the sharpest in this matchup: they have conceded just 22 goals in 23 games, compared to RSL’s 33 allowed in 21. That defensive solidity will be tested by an RSL side that is low on momentum but still playing at home, where crowd support could provide a lift. The key tactical question is whether RSL can create enough volume of chances to pressure Hugo Lloris and an LAFC backline that has been relatively stingy all season, or whether LAFC’s structure snuffs out the home side’s attack the way opponents have been doing to RSL in recent weeks. Son Heung-Min’s movement up front for LAFC against a RSL defense that has been bleeding goals will be worth watching closely.

Standings

Head To Head

Our Prediction

LAFC’s superior defensive record and their points cushion give them the profile of a team that can grind out a result on the road, even in poor form. RSL’s four-match losing streak and a home defense that has been generous all season point toward a match where LAFC’s shape keeps things tight. Expect a low-scoring affair where LAFC have enough quality to take something from the game, though RSL’s need for points at home may force a more open contest than either side would like.
