Di Stéfano won the first five European Cups, scored in all five finals, and is the reason Real Madrid’s identity is built on that competition. He arrived in Madrid in 1953 after a transfer dispute so tangled that the Spanish federation briefly ordered him to alternate seasons between Real and Barcelona.
What made him unusual was range. He was listed as a forward and scored 216 league goals in 282 games for Real, but he defended, dropped to collect the ball from his own goalkeeper and organised the side from wherever he happened to be. Contemporaries described him as playing every position in the same match, and the team sheet did not really apply to him.
He never played at a World Cup — Argentina withdrew, Colombia were not affiliated, and Spain failed to qualify in 1958 before he missed 1962 through injury. It is the one gap in the record, and it explains why he is sometimes left out of arguments he belongs in.
