Maldini played 647 league matches for Milan across twenty-five seasons and never played for another club. He made his debut at sixteen in 1985 and retired at forty-one in 2009, having won five European Cups — a span that covers Sacchi’s pressing side, Capello’s unbeaten league champions and Ancelotti’s Champions League winners.
He started as a left-back and moved to centre-back in his thirties without any visible loss, which is unusual: the position rewards different things. He was known for tackling rarely, on the grounds that a tackle is evidence of a positioning error, and it is the line most often quoted about defending.
He captained Italy at four World Cups and lost the 1994 final on penalties. His father Cesare captained Milan to the European Cup in 1963 and his son Daniel played for the club in 2020, making three generations at one address.
