Sócrates earned a medical degree in Ribeirão Preto while playing for Botafogo-SP, and kept the title of doctor through his career. He scored 172 goals in 297 games for Corinthians between 1978 and 1984, most of them from midfield. At that club he helped run Corinthians Democracy, a player-led vote on team decisions during Brazil’s military rule. He captained the 1982 World Cup side and was named South American Footballer of the Year in 1983. He died on December 4, 2011.
