Colorado Rapids host Seattle still stinging from 0-3 Open Cup exit

Chris Yohou Avatar

Three days removed from a 0-3 semifinal beating at the hands of St. Louis City in the US Open Cup, Colorado Rapids return to Dick’s Sporting Goods Park on Saturday looking to reset. The defeat was blunt and the turnaround quick, but MLS duty waits for no one. Sitting seventh in the Western Conference with 35 points, Matt Wells’s side still have a playoff berth secured, yet the gap to the top six is narrowing and a win here would provide both points and a timely mood shift. Standing in their way are Seattle Sounders, a team that has drawn four of their last five league games and badly need a victory of their own to keep their playoff hopes alive.

Colorado Rapids vs Seattle Sounders

What’s at stake

The Western Conference sends nine teams to the playoffs, and with Colorado sitting seventh on 35 points, they are currently inside that bracket. The top six, however, are pulling away: Vancouver Whitecaps lead with 46 points, Houston Dynamo and FC Dallas both sit on 43, and Los Angeles FC occupy sixth with 40. Colorado’s 35 points leave them five behind LAFC, meaning a win Saturday does not secure a higher seed but does keep pressure on the teams above them. Seattle, ranked 14th with 28 points, trail ninth-placed San Diego by two points, with the Sounders having played two fewer games than several clubs around them. Brian Schmetzer’s side are not out of playoff contention, but the margin for error is thin.

For Colorado, a loss here would shrink the gap between themselves and the chasing pack. Portland Timbers sit eighth on 32 points and San Diego ninth on 30, so a stumble from Wells’s side could turn a comfortable cushion into a genuine contest. For Seattle, three points would move them to 31, pulling them level with San Diego and one behind Portland, suddenly making the final weeks of the regular season considerably more interesting for the Sounders faithful.

How they got here

Colorado’s last five matches across all competitions read W-D-L-W-L. In MLS action they beat CF Montreal 1-0 at home on September 13, drew 1-1 at Austin on September 10, and lost 0-3 at Columbus Crew on September 5. The Open Cup thrashing by St. Louis City three days ago adds a layer of fatigue and frustration heading into this fixture. Seattle’s recent form tells a different story, and not a particularly encouraging one: four consecutive draws in the league, against Los Angeles Galaxy (1-1), New York Red Bulls (0-0), Chicago Fire (2-2), and FC Cincinnati (1-1), sandwiched around a 2-1 home loss to Austin at the end of August.

Colorado sit seventh in the Western Conference with 35 points from 25 games. Seattle are 14th with 28 points from 23 games, leaving them six points off the ninth and final playoff spot held by San Diego, though the Sounders have games in hand that make the picture less straightforward than it appears.

Key battle to watch

Seattle’s inability to win has not been a shortage of effort so much as a lack of finishing punch: they have scored just 25 goals in 23 league games, and their recent run of draws suggests a side that competes without converting. Colorado’s defense is similarly modest, having conceded 32 goals in 25 games. The midfield battle will be telling: Seattle’s Adam Rusnak is the Sounders’ primary playmaker, and if Colorado’s midfield block can limit his influence on transitions, Wells’s side should be able to control territory at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park. If Schmetzer gets Rusnak free between the lines, however, Colorado’s back four could be exposed on a short turnaround.

Head To Head

Our Prediction

History is not on Colorado’s side here: Seattle have won five of the last ten meetings between these clubs and claimed a 2-0 victory in their most recent encounter back in February 2026. That said, the Sounders’ four-draw streak points to a team that is struggling to impose itself rather than one building momentum. Colorado at home, even shaken from their Open Cup exit, carry enough quality to edge a tight game. A narrow Rapids win looks the most plausible outcome, though a draw would fit the pattern of recent meetings between these two sides.
