Steven Gerrard vs Frank Lampard: who was the better player?

Nathan Avatar

Steven Gerrard vs Frank Lampard is the debate that defined English soccer for more than a decade. Lampard scored 177 Premier League goals and won three league titles with Chelsea, and Gerrard scored 186 times in 710 games for Liverpool on the way to the 2005 Champions League. After weighing the numbers, the trophies and the influence, Lampard edges it by the narrowest of margins.

Steven Gerrard of Liverpool and Rafa Benitez Manager of Liverpool lift The European Cup Trophy after winning the UEFA Champions League Final match between AC Milan and Liverpool at Ataturk Stadium on May 25, 2005 in Istanbul, Turkey.
Frank Lampard of Chelsea celebrates kissing the trophy after their victory in the UEFA Champions League Final between FC Bayern Muenchen and Chelsea at the Fussball Arena München on May 19, 2012 in Munich, Germany.

Why this debate never dies

Both broke through at the turn of the millennium, both wore the No. 8 shirt for their clubs, and both starred for England’s golden generation. For years, every pundit in the country had an answer and almost none of them agreed.

They faced each other 33 times in English soccer. Then the rivalry crossed the Atlantic in 2015, when Lampard joined New York City FC and Gerrard signed with the LA Galaxy.

Goals and numbers

Lampard is the most prolific goalscoring midfielder in Premier League history. He scored 211 goals for Chelsea, more than any player in the club’s history, and hit double figures in the league for ten straight seasons.

His 177 Premier League goals include 41 from outside the box, a league record. He also added 102 assists and once played 164 consecutive Premier League games, another record.

Gerrard’s totals are remarkable for a player who did everything on the field. He scored 120 Premier League goals with 92 assists, all for Liverpool, while also tackling, organizing the midfield and taking set pieces.

Trophies and silverware

Lampard owns the bigger trophy cabinet. At Chelsea he won three Premier League titles, four FA Cups, two League Cups, the 2012 Champions League and the 2013 Europa League.

Gerrard’s haul is still elite, with the 2005 Champions League, the 2001 UEFA Cup, two FA Cups and three League Cups. The missing Premier League title remains the one gap on his résumé, and it follows him into every version of this debate.

  • Major trophies (league, domestic cups, European): Lampard 11, Gerrard 7

Individual peak and awards

Gerrard collected the wider range of individual honors. He was voted PFA Players’ Player of the Year for 2005/06, FWA Footballer of the Year in 2009 and UEFA Club Footballer of the Year in 2005.

Lampard’s peak came in one extraordinary year. In 2005 he finished second in the Ballon d’Or, one place ahead of Gerrard, and also won FWA Footballer of the Year and Premier League Player of the Season.

The tiebreaker is versatility. Gerrard played as a holding midfielder, a No. 10, a right winger and a second striker, and he was world class in each role. This round goes to Gerrard, just barely.

Big game moments and influence

Gerrard owns the most famous nights in this rivalry. In Istanbul in 2005, Liverpool trailed AC Milan 3-0 at halftime before his header sparked a comeback that ended with a penalty shootout win.

A year later he rescued the FA Cup final against West Ham with a long range equalizer in stoppage time. He remains the only player to score in an FA Cup final, a League Cup final, a UEFA Cup final and a Champions League final.

Lampard delivered on big stages too. He scored both goals at Bolton in 2005 to clinch Chelsea’s first league title in 50 years, and he found the net in the 2008 Champions League final.

Still, Gerrard carried weaker Liverpool squads in a way Lampard rarely had to at Chelsea. This round goes to Gerrard.

England duty and the MLS years

Gerrard won 114 caps for England and captained the side at the 2010 World Cup, Euro 2012 and the 2014 World Cup. Lampard won 106 caps and scored 29 international goals to Gerrard’s 21, including three at Euro 2004.

In MLS, Lampard left the bigger mark on the stat sheet. He scored 15 goals for New York City FC, with nine in ten games during the summer of 2016, and Gerrard posted 5 goals and 14 assists in 34 MLS games for the LA Galaxy.

Their record against each other also tilts slightly toward Lampard, which settles a tight round in his favor.

  • Head to head in English soccer: Lampard 15 wins, Gerrard 11 wins, 7 draws

The verdict

Frank Lampard wins this debate, 3-2. His goals, his trophy cabinet and his remarkable consistency give him a lead that Gerrard cannot fully close.

Gerrard was the more complete midfielder and the bigger force in the moments that defined an era. The margin is thin enough that every Liverpool fan reading this has a fair case to argue the other way.
