United and Spurs share the spoils in a dramatic 90th-minute draw

Chris Yohou Avatar

Bryan Mbeumo gave Manchester United the lead in the 73rd minute, and Rodrigo Bentancur’s red card for violent conduct in the 78th looked to have sealed the three points. But Dominic Solanke, with the last meaningful act of the game, headed home from Sandro Tonali’s delivery in the 90th minute to rescue a point for Roberto De Zerbi’s Tottenham side. United are left with four draws from six Premier League games, while Tottenham escape Old Trafford with something to show for a display that, despite the red card, still generated the better expected goals figure on the day.

Manchester United vs Tottenham

Key Moments

  • 4′, Conor Gallagher picks up an early yellow card for a foul, setting a feisty tone for the afternoon.
  • 59′, Michael Carrick makes a triple substitution, sending on Joshua Zirkzee, Diogo Dalot, and Carlos Baleba to freshen up a United side that had been unable to break the deadlock.
  • 73′, United break the deadlock. Matheus Cunha plays in Bryan Mbeumo, who finishes to put the home side in front.
  • 78′, Rodrigo Bentancur, introduced only 12 minutes earlier, is sent off for violent conduct, reducing Tottenham to ten men just as the game seemed to be slipping away from them.
  • 90′, Dominic Solanke equalizes with the final touch of the match, converting Sandro Tonali’s delivery to deny United a win against ten men.

Tactical Breakdown

Tottenham controlled the ball for much of the afternoon, finishing with 55 percent possession and an xG of 1.62 against United’s 0.85, suggesting De Zerbi’s side were the more threatening team for long stretches despite failing to score before the final minute. Both teams managed 12 shots and identical corner tallies, but Tottenham’s six blocked shots to United’s three pointed to a home defensive structure that held reasonably firm until it couldn’t.

Carrick’s triple change at the 59th minute was an attempt to shift the game’s momentum, and it worked in the short term. Matheus Cunha’s assist for Mbeumo’s goal came shortly after those changes began to take effect. Bentancur’s red card, however, scrambled United’s defensive shape, as players argued around the incident and three yellow cards were distributed in a chaotic few minutes. The loss of concentration and structure in those moments may have contributed to Tottenham’s ability to push late.

For Tottenham, the failure to score in the first 89 minutes against a United side sitting 12th summed up a difficult start to the season. De Zerbi’s team had the ball and the chances on paper, but converted only when down to ten men with the clock in the red. The system created openings, but the execution in the final third was missing for the majority of the match.

Player Ratings

Mbeumo
8.0/10. The decisive moment of the match belonged to him, finishing calmly from Matheus Cunha’s pass to give United the lead, and he remained a constant threat throughout.
Matheus Cunha
7.0/10. The assist for Mbeumo’s goal was his most important contribution in a performance that showed good movement between the lines.
Maguire
7.5/10. Composed and dominant in the air, he marshaled the backline well for most of the match before Solanke’s late intervention undid the collective effort.
Tonali
7.5/10. The best Tottenham player on the day, running the midfield and delivering the assist for Solanke’s equalizer when it mattered most.
Solanke
7.5/10. Largely quiet against a physical United defense, but showed the instinct and composure to convert with Tottenham a man down and time running out.
Bruno Fernandes
6.5/10. A peripheral figure for much of the afternoon, picked up a yellow card late on, and failed to impose himself on a game United needed him to control.
Bentancur
5.5/10. Introduced in the 66th minute and sent off twelve minutes later for violent conduct, his indiscipline made Tottenham’s task significantly harder.

Head To Head

Verdict

The draw leaves Manchester United at 12th with six points from six games, a patchy start under Michael Carrick that now includes three draws and two losses. Tottenham, sitting 18th with three points, took the minimum from a game they needed to win, and the point does little to address the gap between them and the teams above the relegation line. Solanke’s late intervention at least provides some morale to build on for De Zerbi’s squad, but the underlying numbers suggest far more has to change if either side is going to move toward the top half of the table.
