Bournemouth host AC Milan with perfect Europa League record to defend

Chris Yohou Avatar

Four days after a clean 2-0 win over Sunderland in the Premier League, Bournemouth return to Vitality Stadium for their third Europa League outing of the season. Lewis Rezzougui’s side have been flawless in the competition so far, picking up six points from two games including a 3-0 home dismantling of Sturm Graz and a 2-1 away result at Real Sociedad. AC Milan arrive in similarly good spirits after a 3-2 Serie A win over Atalanta on the same matchday, with Ruben Amorim’s squad looking to climb the league-stage table after an uneven start to their European campaign.

What’s at stake

With only two matchdays played in a 36-team league stage, no single result is definitive, but the gap between Bournemouth and Milan at this moment is a product of their contrasting starts. Bournemouth sit on six points from two wins, with five goals scored and just one conceded. Milan have three points from one win and one loss, having beaten Red Bull Salzburg 4-0 away before losing 2-0 to Benfica at home on matchday one. A win for the Cherries would extend that perfect run to nine points and provide a strong platform for the final matchdays. For Milan, dropping further points here would make the path through the later rounds considerably harder.

The Europa League’s league stage format means a wide range of teams advance, but the points a side accumulates determine which round they enter the knockout phase. Finishing in the top eight earns a direct berth in the last 16, while those placed between ninth and twenty-fourth must go through an additional playoff round. Bournemouth are well-positioned to push for the top tier; Milan, with three points and a negative result on their record, need this match to stay in genuine contention for the more favourable bracket.

How they got here

Bournemouth’s five-match run tells two different stories depending on the competition. In the Europa League, they are two from two: a road win in San Sebastian and a dominant home night against Sturm Graz. In the Premier League, the picture is bumpier, with heavy losses to Chelsea (5-1 away) and Liverpool (1-0 at home) sandwiched around those European successes. Saturday’s 2-0 victory over Sunderland steadied that domestic run and gave the squad a confidence boost heading into Thursday. Milan’s recent form has more highs than lows over their last five: a 3-0 home win over Lecce, a 4-0 thrashing of Salzburg on the road, then a draw at Sassuolo, before that 3-2 win over Atalanta last weekend. Their only poor result in that window was the opening Europa League defeat to Benfica.

Both sides enter matchday 3 having won their most recent game, which gives this fixture an even footing in terms of momentum. Bournemouth have scored five and conceded one in the Europa League across two matches. Milan have scored four and conceded none in their one away European game this season.

Key battle to watch

A. Cisse has been AC Milan’s sharpest attacker in this competition, registering three goals in the Europa League to sit among the top scorers in the tournament. How Bournemouth’s defensive shape handles his movement inside the box will be a central theme. Rezzougui’s side have been relatively organized in their two European outings, conceding only once across 180 minutes. If that defensive structure holds against Milan’s forward pressure, particularly through C. Pulisic and Cisse in combination, Bournemouth’s attacking options from midfield, including J. Kluivert and B. Doak, could exploit any space left by Milan pushing high.

Our Prediction

Bournemouth have been the more consistent side in this competition and the comfort of Vitality Stadium gives them an additional edge. Milan are capable of producing quality on the road, as the Salzburg result showed, but their defensive record against organized sides in Europe remains a question after the Benfica defeat. A home win is the most likely outcome, though Milan’s attacking depth means this will not be a clean sheet given easily.
