Valencia’s relegation slide meets a Villarreal side still stinging from Anfield

Chris Yohou Avatar

Three days after conceding four goals at Anfield in a 4-3 Champions League defeat to Liverpool, Villarreal travel to Mestalla looking to steady themselves in La Liga. The timing matters for their hosts too: Valencia have collected just six points from nine matches and sit 19th in the table, three points adrift of the safety line. Javier Aguirre’s side have won just once all season, and a second consecutive draw last weekend against Athletic Club did little to ease the pressure. Saturday’s fixture is the kind of game that defines where a difficult season is heading.

What’s at stake

Valencia are in the relegation zone, currently occupying 19th place with six points from nine matches. Only Malaga (4 points) sit below them, and the gap to 17th-placed Racing Santander is two points. Elche, directly above Valencia in 18th, hold seven points. With one win, three draws and five defeats, Aguirre’s team have conceded 15 goals and scored just six, which tells most of the story. A win at Mestalla on Saturday would lift them out of the bottom three, at least temporarily, and give their season a foothold it has so far lacked.

For Villarreal, the stakes are different in kind if not in intensity. Sitting 12th on nine points, Inigo Perez’s side are six places and three points clear of Valencia but also only five points behind the clubs that are beginning to separate themselves in the upper-mid table. A defeat in Valencia would push them closer to the lower half on a day when rivals could gain ground. For a club also managing Champions League commitments, dropping points to a struggling side at this stage would be a poor result to absorb.

How they got here

Valencia’s last five league results read: draw, draw, loss, win, loss. That single victory came away at Alaves in mid-September, and it remains the only time they have taken three points all season. The 0-0 against Athletic Club last week extended their winless run at Mestalla and offered little attacking threat. They have not won consecutive league games since before this campaign began. Villarreal’s recent La Liga form shows two wins, two draws and a defeat in their last five domestic fixtures. Their 3-1 home win over Napoli in the Champions League earlier this month was offset by a 0-1 loss at Real Madrid in the league, then a goalless draw at home to Elche last weekend before the trip to Anfield.

Valencia sit 19th, three points from safety. Villarreal are 12th on nine points, a similar tally to several clubs clustered between 7th and 15th. The head-to-head record over the last ten meetings favours Villarreal clearly: five wins against Valencia’s two, with three draws. In the last five meetings between these sides, Valencia have not won once. Villarreal beat them 2-1 and 2-0 in the two most recent encounters.

Key battle to watch

The central midfield contest will likely decide how much of the ball Valencia can actually use. Villarreal have players like Santi Comesana and Alberto Moleiro capable of controlling tempo, while Valencia’s Pepelu and Javi Guerra will need to win second balls and limit space if the home side want to sustain any pressure in the final third. Valencia have conceded 15 goals in nine games, a rate that points to defensive vulnerability rather than bad luck. If Villarreal’s attacking players, particularly Gerard Moreno and Ayoze Perez, can get the ball in transition, the home backline will be tested repeatedly. Aguirre needs his midfield to hold the shape and give the defense a chance to settle.

Our Prediction

Villarreal arrive with the Anfield defeat fresh in mind, but the head-to-head record at Mestalla gives them reason for confidence rather than caution. Valencia have shown little attacking cohesion this season and have won just one league game, so it is hard to back them to break a run that has now seen them fail to beat Villarreal in five straight meetings. Expect Villarreal to control enough of the game to take something from it, though Valencia’s need for points at home makes a tense, low-scoring affair the most plausible outcome.
