Brighton’s Champions League push runs into Liverpool’s Anfield momentum

Chris Yohou Avatar

Four days after Liverpool beat Villarreal 4-3 in the Champions League, Andoni Iraola’s side return to Anfield with their tails up and a point to prove in domestic football. That European night, seven goals shared across 90 minutes, did little to dampen confidence on Merseyside. Now comes a stiffer test: a Brighton side that has won four of its last five Premier League matches and sits third in the table with 16 points from seven games. The gap between these two teams is four points, but Brighton have a game in hand, and Fabian Hürzeler’s outfit will arrive believing a win can consolidate their position among England’s elite.

Liverpool vs Brighton

What’s at stake

Brighton are currently third in the Premier League with 16 points, sitting in a Champions League qualification spot. Manchester City and Arsenal are joint top on 21 points, meaning Brighton are already five points adrift of first place but eight points ahead of Liverpool in fifth. For the Seagulls, the priority is holding on to that top-four position and keeping a buffer over the chasing pack. Liverpool, on 12 points, currently occupy a Europa League spot. Win here and they move to 15 points, pulling within one of Brighton and applying genuine pressure on the top four.

A Brighton win would stretch their lead over Liverpool to seven points and send a statement to both clubs directly above and below them. For Liverpool, the consequence of dropping points is a widening gap to the Champions League places at a stage of the season when momentum matters. Iraola’s side cannot afford to keep handing ground to the teams around them in what is shaping up to be a congested top half of the table.

Liverpool vs Brighton

How they got here

Liverpool have been effective in patches without yet finding full consistency in the league. Their last five results across all competitions read as three wins, one loss and one draw. In the Premier League specifically, they beat Brentford 2-1 away, drew on a separate occasion, but suffered a 3-0 home loss to Manchester City on October 11. The Champions League has offered a different picture: six goals at Lask Linz, then four against Villarreal. Brighton, meanwhile, have been one of the division’s form sides. They dismantled Crystal Palace 5-0 at home on October 18, beat Sunderland 2-0 away, and earlier put three past Arsenal without reply. Their only blemish in five matches is a 0-0 draw in Prague against FK Jablonec in the Conference League on Thursday, two days before this fixture.

Brighton sit third on 16 points from seven games played. Liverpool are fifth on 12 points from seven games. Chelsea in fourth have 13 points from eight games, meaning Liverpool could jump above them with a win here. The top two, City and Arsenal, are on 21 points apiece and pulling clear.

Key battle to watch

Alexander Isak has five Premier League goals this season and leads Liverpool’s attacking line. He will go up against a Brighton backline that has conceded just five goals in seven league games, the best defensive record in the top half of the table. How Brighton’s center-backs handle Isak’s movement in behind will shape much of what Liverpool can do offensively. If Iraola’s forwards can exploit the spaces Brighton’s high defensive line leaves, the hosts have the quality to hurt them. But if Hürzeler’s defense keeps Isak quiet, Brighton’s midfield, anchored by Pascal Gross and Mats Wieffer, has the intelligence to control the tempo and set up their own attackers, Kaoru Mitoma and Yasin Ayari among them, in transition.

Our Prediction

Liverpool’s home record and the bounce from the Villarreal win give them an edge, but Brighton’s defensive structure and their recent form against top opposition make this a tighter game than the standings gap suggests. Brighton dropped points twice in their last ten visits to this fixture, and Hürzeler will set up to be compact and dangerous on the counter. Expect Liverpool to carry the game but Brighton to make life uncomfortable enough that this is decided by a single moment rather than a commanding display.
