Juventus head to Lecce looking to stop a worrying Serie A slide

Chris Yohou Avatar

Three days after being held 2-2 at home by Rennes in the Europa League, Juventus head to Puglia with questions piling up about their domestic form. Luciano Spalletti’s side have won just one of their last four Serie A matches, and their 0-3 home loss to Lazio last weekend made Sunday’s trip to the Stadio Via del Mare something of a reality check. Lecce, meanwhile, arrive at this fixture off the back of a tidy 3-0 win at Udinese and are level on points with Juventus’s neighbors Atalanta, sitting two points below the visitors in 12th. This is a match both teams can use to steady themselves in a table that remains tightly bunched outside the top four.

What’s at stake

With nine qualifying places in Serie A leading to European competition this season, the gap from mid-table to that threshold is smaller than it looks. Juventus, in 10th on 11 points from seven games, sit level on points with Napoli in ninth and trail sixth-place Frosinone by just two. Lecce, on nine points from seven matches, are only three points off a European play-off spot. A win here nudges either side meaningfully toward that upper cluster, and a loss pushes them toward the chasing pack where Bologna, Sassuolo, and Monza are all breathing close behind.

For Juventus, the context adds a layer of pressure. Spalletti’s squad is running two competitions simultaneously, and the Europa League draw with Rennes came just 72 hours before this kick-off. A second consecutive Serie A setback after the heavy defeat to Lazio would leave Juventus five points off the Europa League direct places with their game in hand starting to count for less. Lecce’s motivation is simpler: they have never beaten Juventus in the last ten head-to-head meetings, and three points at home would be the clearest possible sign that Eusebio Di Francesco’s side belongs in the conversation for the upper half.

Lecce vs Juventus

How they got here

Lecce’s last five in Serie A read W-L-L-W-L, with the wins coming in contrasting circumstances: a 3-2 home victory over Monza in September and the recent 3-0 at Udinese, which will have done their confidence real good. The losses have been heavy, conceding three at AC Milan and three at home to Bologna, so Di Francesco’s side are still searching for defensive reliability against better opponents. Juventus’s Serie A form is W-L-D-L in their last four league outings, with the defeat to Lazio the most damaging. They drew 1-1 at Cagliari before that, so road form in the league has not been convincing either.

In the table, Juventus sit 10th on 11 points from seven games played. Lecce are 12th on nine points, also from seven games. The top three, Lazio (22 points), Inter (19), and Roma (18), have largely broken away, but the block from fourth through to 12th is separated by just eight points, which keeps Sunday’s fixture meaningful without it being a crisis point for either side.

Key battle to watch

The central midfield contest will likely decide the match. Juventus are carrying Teun Koopmeiners and Douglas Luiz in a double pivot that has looked disjointed in recent Serie A outings, conceding far too much ground in transition against Lazio. Lecce counter through vertical passes quickly, and the likes of Youssef Maleh and Nikola Ilic have the energy to exploit space between the lines when Juventus’s midfield sits high. If Spalletti can get his block compact and deny Lecce that transition speed, Juventus’s quality on the ball should eventually tell. If the Bianconeri are as open as they were against Lazio, Di Francesco’s forwards will find room to cause problems.

Head To Head

Our Prediction

The head-to-head record is stark: Lecce have not beaten Juventus in ten attempts, and three of the last five fixtures have ended with a Juventus win or draw away from Turin. That said, Spalletti’s side look short of rhythm in the league right now, and a trip to Puglia three days after a Europa League game is far from ideal. Expect Juventus to control stretches of the game without fully convincing, with Lecce pressing hard on the break. A narrow Juventus win or a draw feels most consistent with both teams’ recent form.
