Liverpool and Atletico Madrid gave us great Champions League games over the past years. And for this first matchday of the 2025/2026 campaign, it happened again. Arne Slot’s players, in front of their incredible fans, did not wait long to wrap up the game.
At the 4th minute already, the Reds obtained a great free-kick, Mohamed Salah takes it, the ball is deflected by Andrew Robertson. 1-0. 2 minutes later, combination between Ryan Gravenberch and Mohamed Salah, the Egyptian finished the chance, 2-0 already in a noisy Anfield.
Atletico Madrid did not give up as always, and Marcos Llorente reduced the scoreline just before the break (45’+3). In the second half, both teams got couple of chances, but it is Marcos Llorente who finds the net once again at the 81st minute with a beautiful volley outside the penalty area.
Statistically, Liverpool dominated the game, we were close to an other great result with fight and believe from Atletico until Virgil van Dijk scored the game winner with a perfect header after a corner from Dominik Szoboszlai (90’+2).
Liverpool made a successful debut with 3 points, Atletico Madrid only won 1 time in their first 5 games of the season.
