Real Oviedo is a Spanish football club founded in 1926 and based in Oviedo, the capital of the Asturias region in northern Spain. The club competes in La Liga and plays its home matches at the Estadio Nuevo Carlos Tartiere. Oviedo spent several seasons in the top division of Spanish football during the twentieth century before experiencing a prolonged period in the lower leagues, including a widely publicised financial crisis in the early 2000s that threatened the club's existence.
The club attracted international attention when supporters from around the world purchased shares to help secure its survival. Oviedo subsequently worked its way back through the divisions. The current squad includes goalkeeper Aarón Escandell, defenders Dani Calvo and David Costas, and forward Miguel Narváez, among others. R. Alhassane and Espi have also featured as notable members of the playing group in recent seasons.
