Tight and at times uninspired, Morocco eventually managed to make the difference in the opening match of their AFCON at home. A 2–0 victory against a timid Comoros side.
- Morocco 2-0 Comoros : Diaz 55’, El Kaabi 74’
In a Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium at a boiling point, as requested by head coach Walid Regragui, Morocco started the match well and earned a penalty after 10 minutes following a foul on Brahim Díaz. Soufiane Rahimi had the chance to put Morocco on the right track but missed from the spot. From that moment on, doubt crept into the Moroccan ranks, with the team piling up crosses without finding a target. As seen in several narrow wins before, Morocco struggled against a well-organized low block that lacked attacking threat.
Morocco pushed harder and finally broke through in the 55th minute. From a long ball by Amrabat, Mazraoui controlled and set up Brahim Díaz for the opening goal. That goal freed Morocco, and Ayoub El Kaabi went on to score one of the goals of the tournament with an outstanding overhead kick. Morocco found the right moments of brilliance and could also rely on a solid goalkeeper, as Bono denied a clear Comorian chance.
Morocco get their tournament off to a positive start and can now look ahead with confidence.
