The Faroe Islands national team was founded in 1979 and takes part in FIFA and confederation competitions.
Overview
The Faroe Islands national football team represents the Faroe Islands in international association football and is governed by the Faroese Football Association, which was founded in 1979. The team competes in UEFA European Championship qualifying and FIFA World Cup qualifying cycles, and is a member of both FIFA and UEFA. The Faroese side has no major senior international titles on record, which is typical for a small island nation competing in European football.
The team gained wider attention in 1990 when it achieved a notable victory against Austria in an unofficial match shortly before gaining full FIFA membership. Since then, the Faroese have periodically claimed results against stronger opponents in qualifying competition. Current players associated with the squad include Silas Eydsteinsson, A. Petersen, B. Reynatrod, M. Agnarsson, J. Benjaminsen and J. Danielsen. The squad draws from a small domestic population, and players often combine professional careers abroad with international duty.
