San Marino have played international football since 1931, competing in FIFA World Cup qualifying and continental tournaments.
Overview
San Marino is one of the smallest sovereign states in the world, and its national football team reflects that scale. The national federation was established in 1931, and the team competes under UEFA in FIFA World Cup and European Championship qualifying campaigns. San Marino has not won a major senior international title, and the team regularly faces opponents ranked far above them in the FIFA standings. Despite this, the side continues to participate consistently in competitive football at the international level.
The squad draws players from the domestic San Marino Football Championship and from clubs in neighbouring Italy. Among the current notable players are P. Amici, E. Colombo, M. De Angelis, L. Hoel, M. Zavoli, and G. Benvenuti. Squad numbers are modest, as eligibility rules require players to hold San Marinese citizenship.
Qualification campaigns are typically difficult given the competitive gap between San Marino and most European opponents. The team nonetheless fulfils its fixtures and maintains full membership of both UEFA and FIFA.
