Overview

Montenegro's national football team represents one of Europe's newer independent footballing nations, having competed under its own flag following the country's declaration of independence in 2006. The national federation was originally founded in 1931, during a period when the territory formed part of a larger Yugoslav state. Montenegro joined FIFA and UEFA in 2007 and has since participated in World Cup and European Championship qualifying campaigns without reaching the finals of either competition.

The team has produced several capable players who have competed at club level across European leagues. Current squad members include M. Dubljanić, Benjamin Krijestarac, I. Nikić, D. Petković, B. Popović, and A. Marušić. Montenegro has no major senior international titles on record.

Given the country's small population, qualifying progress has been modest but consistent. The team plays its home matches in Podgorica and continues to develop its footballing infrastructure under UEFA membership.
