Latvia have played international football since 1921, competing in FIFA World Cup qualifying and continental tournaments.
Overview
The Latvia national football team represents Latvia in international association football and is governed by the Latvian Football Federation, which was founded in 1921. The team competes in UEFA competitions and has participated in qualifying campaigns for the FIFA World Cup and the UEFA European Championship, though it has not won either tournament or any other major senior international title. Latvia achieved its most notable period of form in the early 2000s, qualifying for UEFA Euro 2004, which remains the team's only appearance at a major international tournament final stage.
The squad draws players from domestic clubs and from professional leagues across Europe. Among the currently notable players are Raivis Matrevics, Francis Orols, Kristians Zviedris, Davis Balodis, Arturs Černomordijs and Antonijs Cigaņiks. The team plays its home matches in Riga. Latvia occupies a modest position in the FIFA world rankings and continues to develop its football infrastructure at club and international level.
