Ghana at world cup 2026 : searching a new begining

Imrane Avatar

Ghana heads into its fifth FIFA World Cup with a mixture of ambition and uncertainty. After making African football history by reaching the quarterfinals in 2010, the Black Stars are looking to reclaim their place among the most respected nations on the international stage. Qualification for the 2026 World Cup was followed by a major change, however, as Otto Addo departed and veteran Portuguese coach Carlos Queiroz was appointed just weeks before the tournament.

The group

Ghana has been drawn into Group L alongside England, Croatia, and Panama.

It is one of the toughest groups in the tournament, where every point could prove decisive.

England enters as the clear favorite thanks to the depth of its squad and its ambitions of lifting the World Cup trophy. Croatia, despite the gradual aging of its golden generation, remains a dangerous opponent with a proven record on the biggest stages.

In this context, Ghana may find itself battling Panama for third place while hoping to pull off an upset against one of the two European heavyweights. The opening match against Panama already looks crucial for the Black Stars’ qualification hopes.

With the expanded 48-team format allowing several third-placed teams to advance, Ghana knows that a smart and pragmatic campaign could be enough to reach the knockout rounds.

Key players

Antoine Semenyo

The leading attacking weapon of this Ghanaian side.

After an outstanding Premier League season in which he scored 17 goals and provided four assists, Semenyo arrives at the World Cup in the form of his life. Powerful, versatile, and capable of creating chances on his own, he will carry much of Ghana’s attacking responsibility.

His ability to run in behind defenses, hold up play, and finish chances makes him the natural offensive leader of the Black Stars.

Ernest Nuamah

Long regarded as one of Ghana’s brightest prospects, Ernest Nuamah finally appears ready to take on a major role at international level.

After several seasons marked by flashes of brilliance and occasional inconsistency, the winger has made significant strides in his decision-making and end product. His pace, dribbling ability, and willingness to take on defenders provide Ghana with a dangerous outlet on the flanks.

In a team likely to rely heavily on quick transitions, Nuamah could become one of the tournament’s most influential players.

Iñaki Williams

The Athletic Club forward brings speed, explosiveness, and valuable experience to the Ghanaian attack.

Even when he is not scoring, Williams stretches opposing defenses and creates space for Semenyo and the other attackers around him. His tireless work rate and commitment off the ball perfectly fit the demands of modern football and the principles Carlos Queiroz is expected to implement.

His ability to turn defense into attack in a matter of seconds could be a decisive asset in a difficult group.

The face of Ghana in 2026

TORONTO, ONTARIO – JUNE 16: Ghana head coach Carlos Queiroz watches his team warm up during a training session one day ahead of the FIFA World Cup 2026 Group L match between Ghana and Panama at Toronto Stadium on June 16, 2026 in Toronto, Ontario. (Photo by Ezra Shaw – FIFA/FIFA via Getty Images)

Ghana’s preparation for the tournament was dramatically altered by a coaching change in the spring of 2026.

Following a series of disappointing performances and a perceived lack of tactical identity, Otto Addo left his position. The Ghana Football Association responded by appointing Carlos Queiroz, one of the most experienced international managers in modern football.

The former coach of Portugal, Iran, Colombia, and Egypt is preparing for his fifth World Cup campaign, a testament to his remarkable experience at the highest level of the game.

His arrival has already influenced the team’s tactical direction.

Where Otto Addo often relied on a back three that occasionally appeared vulnerable, Queiroz is expected to favor a more compact back four and a better-organized mid-block. Early preparation matches have shown a more disciplined defensive structure and greater coordination in pressing situations.

The objective is clear: maximize the transitional qualities of players such as Semenyo, Williams, and the rest of Ghana’s attacking talent while reducing the defensive mistakes that have plagued the team in recent years.

This World Cup could mark the beginning of an entirely new cycle for the Black Stars.

Alongside experienced figures, Ghana possesses a number of exciting young prospects, including Caleb Yirenkyi, a midfielder frequently compared to Michael Essien because of his physical presence and all-around abilities.

In a highly competitive Group L, Ghana is not among the favorites.

Yet if Queiroz can quickly instill his ideas and if Semenyo continues the exceptional form he has shown at club level, the Black Stars possess enough quality to dream of a return to the knockout stages for the first time since their unforgettable run in South Africa in 2010.

More than a qualification campaign, this tournament may be the first chapter of Ghana’s next great generation.
